Short barrel 7mm08 ?

I recently bought a used Tikka barrel in 7-08, it is 19". I bought it with the intention of putting it on a Sako A7 I bought for my wife. Before buying it I did some googling, and as has been said here there doesn't seem to be any issue with it.

I haven't done anything with it, but am looking forward to it. Planning to try 120 TTSX. I seem to remember people recommending Varget with the short barrel.

For the 22" and longer barrels powders in the H414, RL17, BigGame burn rates do well.
With the shorter barrels i'd lean towards the faster burn rate of Varget, H4895, RL15.
You'd still get excellent accuracy, but cut down on the fireball potential at the muzzle.
I tried RL16 with the AI. I personally didn't care for it. Too bulky, and i didn't like the recoil impulse. More a sharp slap, than a push.
If i wanted that, i'd insult the Mrs.
Never doing that again...

I shoot a 20" 7-08 AI.
A 7-08 is not big enough for heavy bullets. I wouldn't shoot over a 150 and it shoots fine out of a 1-10. Absolutely no need for a 1-8.
In the mid-90's I bought a new Rem Mtn Rifle 7mm-08 (22" barrel). Over the years between me and my son it has killed a couple dozen MI whitetails, a few at 300 yds+. All with Sierra 160gr HP Boatail Game Kings, loaded with Varget. The majority dropped right where stood.

Thats the same bullet im wanting to use.

Unless the throat (and the magazine) are really long those 160gr Sierra's are jammed way into the case.

You'll get just as good results using a 140gr.
My longest shot was 413 yards with the 140gr Berger VLD. Somehow (i'm still to this day wondering how) she made it 20 yards. Both lungs destroyed. Heart in 2 pieces and consistancy of goo.

You'd be hard pressed to find a more forgiving round than the 7-08. Just about any decent 140'ish grain bullet and a medium burn rate powder like varget, 4895 or RL15 and you're in the movies! ! !

Short barrel 7-08 guys who hunt with them get to shoot occasionally without earplugs. I am a firm believer in the Kaw Valley linear compensators. They are not heavy and only cost $50. They eliminate that ice pick sting that leaves your left ear buzzin for a few days! FYI

Thats the one! If I shoot my 556 carbine bare with w/o ears just once I will get a piercing pain and my left ear will hurt and ringt for days. If I shoot it with no ears with the comp installed then nothing major and dont feel the blast on side of face.. This is outdoors and not in a covered range where blast can bounce back at you.

My brother and nephew's model 7's in 7/08 with Gentry muzzle brakes are amazing with those stick on wheel weights in the forearm. 140g sierra flat base is a shore nuff deer killer along with the Berger 140g vld hunting in these short barrels. My neice killed a 260 lb buck out West with one at 430 yards with the Berger 140 Vld hunting.

Took my Rem 700 Varmint Rifle in 1998, took of the well used barrel and replaced it with a Fluted Lilja 9 Twist Barrel and had it finished at 24" Killed my first mule deer at 500 yds. with 140Gr. Sierra Spbt. In 2001 I had the barrel cut and re-crowned at 21". Shoots consistently in the low to mid 3's, to his day it still shoots lights out have never had a deer go more than 50yds., most went bang flop. Still my favorite deer rifle. ;)
