Help me decide on a sporter

Looking to put me together a sporter for IR 50/50 from some components I have around. I’ve got a CZ 457 and 40X. I do 40X conversions to take Vudoo mags and this one has been done. I’ll need to fit a barrel to either but would prefer the 40X I’m just not sure I could make weight. If I try it I’ll glue in a bushing and then bore and thread for a 3/4 tenon. I’m sure that’ll add weight and then I have to worry about bottom metal. I can try to find or make an AICS bottom metal from delrin or something to save weight but questionable if I’d ever get it into a stock that size?

Would it be legal per the rules to gut and shorten a mag or even cut and modify one width wise and make a custom bottom metal for it that’s smaller? I doubt anyone has tried this with one of my converted actions so it’s probably a unique situation and I’m just not sure what the rules would allow. I can always scrap this idea and put a factory tray back in over the magwell and make it a 10.5 or 13.5 with the barrel on it. I just thought it’d be cool if I could make it work.

If I were to use the CZ what stock have you seen people use or what would you recommend? I’ve been able to get these things to shoot surprisingly well but I’d still rather use the 40X for sentimental reasons.

For the work and money to do it, I would just buy a 2500xs and built off of it. You aren’t going to be competitive with the CZ and the 40x with all of the work may not be ideal either.

I have a 457 with a #5 Shilen Ratchet glued in and it's a hammer. Mine is currently in a Boyds Pro Varmint which is pretty nice on the bench...

If you go with a CZ I suggest the 452 or 453 American, they have that great MD-PAS ignition, two action screws and the action is threaded. There are even a few trigger options available.

What is the Ideal action for a IR sporter ?
The Anschutz 54 ?
Listen to Hozzie, you’re kidding yourself with a CZ and your approach with a 40X unlikely to make weight.
You try building one yourself as a first try you are not going to be competitive in the least. This is, for a contender, a very specialized build.Far and away a better bet to find a good used one. The only ones that will work well are on 2500’s or Turbos.

Thanks guys. I agree if mostly filled with 2500s and Turbos there’s no need in building off either of these. There is some sentimental value to this 40X was why I was considering it but I doubt I could ever make weight with that setup. I’ll try to find a 2500xs or something else as a base. A used rifle is a good idea to get the components.

Dan Killough has 5 Trident , right bolt, left port actions in stock. $1450.00
Trident is a three lug 2500

While there is nothing wrong with a Trident action for heavy gun or UL, it does not have a magazine, which by rule has to be installed in the action when shooting a sanctioned IR Sporter class. In the Stiller/PQP series of actions, the 2500XS is the one to find. Keep in mind as well, many of these actions were sold without the magazine kit after Jerry came up with a single feed ramp that went in several to make UL/heavy guns out of them. I am fairly certain there is new old stock of the magazine kits at PQP/Stiller shop, but best to check before buying one with feed ramp kit installed. The 2500XS is also 2oz lighter than a 2500X, which is very important!

With a short light weight contour barrel and some lightweight rings/bases/scope I bet you could get there. Hogging out a MCM stock will also help.

I went down this path often when I shot silhouette. Sometimes it worked, sometimes it didnt. But I always learned a ton along the way.

Will a 2500xr action fit the rules. Me and my dad both shoot them at local matches. We feed them through a magazine and have no complaints with them

IR-50/50 Sporter is maybe the most specialized of all shooting sports. It takes absolutely proper equipment to even start to be competitive. There are absolutely no shortcuts, don't even try, get yourself a used sporter.

I'll have Jim make a stock for whatever I decide. We go way back on 40X stuff and I talked to him this morning about it. I've got some feelers out there for an action so hoping I run into something good. I'd rebarrel whatever used complete rifle I could buy so I'm better off just sourcing components if I can. I'm making out a big order of sporter barrels to Paul right now. It'll probably take a while to get all of the stuff together but I'm sure I'll be happier in the end.

Sure.Any action will fit the rules, the issue is to use one to make 7.5lb. Max weight limit.
Also, while magazines are required you do not need to feed from one.

You referring to Jim Peightal?
Final thought, again, you’d be far and away better with a solid used gun with a history. A sporter build is the single toughest gun to get competitive right out of the box, you can take that to the bank.

If you can attend the Sporter triple deuce match at Piney Hill, Va. on Sunday Feb. 18th.
There will be a collection of the best sporters shooters in the country there. You will also get a good look at the equipment used.

As John said the IR 50/50 Sporter is the most highly developed rifle used in RFBR.

No one doubts your abilities but many before you now wish they had done proper due diligence before building a rifle that just won’t hunt in current company.

The rifle and rest are the first hurdle.

With your history you probably already have the shooting skills to handle a 7.5 lb. rifle with a 6.5x scope, shooting off of sand bags front and rear. With that thought in mind there is a reason unlimited classes with very heavy rifles, one piece rests and high magnification (50-60X) scopes
are so much more popular than the Sporter classes.

I can assure you, you will be very well received if you show up. We are always looking for new Sporter shooters.

Thanks Tony for the invite. If at all possible I'll come. I think it may be late March or April before they crank up here. Not compromising on components is going to put me out of shooting one for myself for a while but I'll be better off in the end. I'm looking forward to shooting and building more of these. I am used to shooting lighter weight stuff with low power from past endeavors and agree on the reasons for different. It is a challenge for sure.
