Heavy Varmint vs. Heavy Palma

HV, less recoil, shoot longer before having to cool. After all you only carry it from the vehicle to the bench. HV seems to track better for me anyway. You’re know more when you get back.
You do realize that weight can be put other places and even better control recoil, than only the bbl? Splitting hairs that do matter but otherwise, weight is weight.

I'm "Tickled Pink" with, my 24" Medium Heavy "Sporter" contour, Criterion barrel, in 6 XC that weigh's, 9.5 Pounds
( 10 lbs, Braked ) on, a Rem 700 SS Action with, an H-S Precision, alum. Pillared, stock W/ Kydex cheek riser.
Stiff enough, to produce, 5 Shot, One Hole group's with, most TUNED Bullets / loads, in the low 2's to 3's with, NO,.. POI "Shifting" and, it's quite carryable after, Varmints / Yotes or after, an Antelope, maybe.
It's my heaviest Rifle and, I personally, would NOT want to carry, any more weight, after Varmints !
The Rifle is still, a Tiny Bit, muzzle heavy with, it's .707 dia muzzle and the brake, but the small amount of, Recoil "Tracks" straight back, a bit, with the 107 / 108's and, barely moves with, the 80 grain, Berger Varmint bullets !

You all know my answer will usually be... get one of both cause life can be short... that way you know which one works better for you or if it makes any difference to you at all.

A have liked all of them for different reasons.

Something like a Sendero I will carry for a stand or for short distances, but not to hump up and down mountains.

If I know it is just from the truck to the swivel table, I don't mind a straight bbl since it will accept any muzzle cuts and soaks up longer strings if there are suicidal mounds that need some attention. In better places, I will use that barrel mass but I decide how many magazines to load in an attempt to force myself to rotate and let them cool off.

No, not really or I'm missing your point.
The dude said he wanted a dedicated pd rifle. Most just drive truck to spot, unload bench etc n go to work. Fat heavy barrels soak up heat better. Thats all I meant. Balance? U got a front rest so adjust it front to rear. Not talking about all around rifles or ones to pack n hunt coyotes with etc. just a pd rifle

I use MTU profile a lot for competition and varmint rifles where weight is not an issue.

Depending on your level of skill making sure it matches your stock limitations is important unless you have the skill and means to modify your stock to make sure it is free floated. Very few stocks come from the factory able to accoumadat a 1.25 to 1.35 straight cylinder with out some work! So everyone keep that in mind.

I recently used a barrel that I purchased for another build on another project and had to deal with that. I had the barrel on hand though so I used it.

I have a 1.350 SS striaght cylinder 1:9.5 very long 338 barrel that I am likely not going to use any time soon the barrel is I think 17lbs. To date I have never owned a stock that from the maker would fit a 1.350 straight cylinder.

You have certainly touched on a significant question. For me, in my limited three PD hunts of a couple days each, I found that balance meant everything. I shoot off of a heavy tripod, standing, and how the gun sits in the tripod really effects the Pleasure factor of shooting. I have met the balance issue in several very disparate guns. I shot a Contender with a 24 inch "bull" barrel that balanced nicely. I also shot a 40X clone with a 20 inch HV barrel that sat like a fat duck in that pod, without a quiver. However, my first attempt at a custom (Bat SV, 24 inch LV and MCM BR stock) was the biggest PIA I ever shot for two days straight. It never wanted to balance, ride clean or recoil cleanly ever, once. It has since been put in a walnut "40X like stock", only nicer! Time will tell on balance.

Now, If I were shooting off a rest and bags on a table, the TC would have been awful, and the other two would have been great. In the end, I think the key is balance. Not too muzzle heavy, and it helps if you can balance with stock weight. Me? I'd go LV or HV and weight the stock to attain a neutral ride.

For shooting varmints with a Bench Rest round, I always go with a straight tube, and when accuracy falls off, I have the chamber cut off and start over with a new chamber and throat, and accuracy is always superb!

Another good thing about a set-up like this is that you can watch the bullet impact it's target, and when shooting prairie dogs, coyotes, crows or deer, the extra weight from a bull barrel and added muzzle brake is well worth it.

You can also get a Max Varmint. I have a 30" from Hart that has
6" of straight before tapering to .950". I had Stan Taylor at Douglas
some time back spec me a 28" with 7 Inches of straight and tapering
to .960. That barrel is now re-chambered and mounted back up with
a tuner added. I have it right at 22 lbs.

In my opinion HV for the win! Plenty of straight taper to set-back if desired. Easier on the bedding than a straight taper. I see no advantage to a straight taper over a HV contour. I also believe a HV tunes better for the ultimate in accuracy. Just my personal opinion and nothing more. Lol.

I have HV 6 creed for my long range windy PD gun. I filled the stock with lead shot and epoxy and I have one heavy stock spacer. its so heavy my kitchen scale can't weigh it. You need to eat your wheeties just to lift it out of the safe. I once carried it 100yards to the bench and almost died lol. For me its all about spotting my misses and watching the fireworks. I have other PD rigs inn 223 and 17 hornet if I am walking.
