Going with Air

‘You should still consider lubing pellets. Every shot will leave a little lube in the barrel. Makes cleaning the barrel a lot easier. Also cheap insurance against rust inside the barrel. The lube will help if your air source has any amount of moisture in it.
Yeah I’ll probably shake them around in some Hotshots Nano oil but not gonna go thru the trouble of washing and drying first

I use MTC scopes but the aztec and hawkes are good too on airguns and they focus down to 10yd
The scopes Dusty named are springer rated scopes. A springer will trash a $2000 rifle scope in a heartbeat because of the reverse recoil. A PCP doesn’t have this problem. You can use any scope as long as it will focus to your desired distance.

Is this normal cleaning a pcp rifle the first time? Looks like brown residue from rust coming out of the barrel. At first it was black, and then started turning brown.

Pellets are treated with a coating that prevents the lead from oxidation. After the initial cleaning to remove the preservative from the manufacturer, the black you remove from the barrel is from the pellet coating. I’ve never seen it affect accuracy.

I mostly shoot JSB pellets. They come from the factory clean. No dented skirts. Very uniform weight & head size. I don't sort. Open the tin and start shooting. If shooting competition, maybe sort then?

I had a LoGun Pro MK something. Probably the most accurate rifle I’ve ever shot. Before you dismiss washing the pellets , try it. I would swirl them in a jar of hot water with a little dawn. Dump them out on paper towels and you will be surprised by the amount flakes that wash off. Some brands look as it you shook a pepper shaker on the paper towels. I can’t help but believe it helps.

BTW. I used a Leopold 6.5-20 air rifle scope. It actually had air rifle on the golden ring. It’s on my 10-22 now.

Yeah another big appeal for me on pcp was being able to use normal rifle scopes.

My break barrel Gamo 10x Magnum has such a super fast sharp recoil it actually hurts my face to shoot and I hate it for that. Very uncomfortable.

My PCP has virtually no felt recoil at all and is an absolute pleasure to shoot. If I watch carefully, I can actually see the pellets flying down range to the target

Anyone else shoot pcp air rifles? I’m just starting to get into it. My first rifle and HP compressor will be here at the end of the week. It has an externallly adjustable regulator and valve hammer spring. Although I have no hands on experience with pcp rifles just yet, I have been doing a ton of research for quite a while now. I have a very fast break barrel air rifle, but that thing sucks for accuracy and is a drag to shoot by cocking the barrel every time.

I have a bunch of 22lr rifles that are very accurate but I hate being at the mercy of ammo manufacturers. Looks like many pcp rifles can be every bit as accurate as a 22lr out to about 100 yards so I figured I’d give this air thing a try. Have a bunch of different JSB and H&N pellets and slugs for testing. Any tips or pointers from other air rifle shooters?
Yes, a 177 Benjamin Marauder. Shot a garden eater at a measured 63 yards last week, no wind, JSB pellet. The JSB’s are the best pellet I’ve ever shot, I don’t think you’ll be disappointed. Wouldn’t hurt to get some of their heavies for your springer, you might like it better.

I have two springers and the pcp. The pcp is what I grab now when I’m working pest control. Whisper quiet and fast follow up shots with the 10 shot clip.

I have a manual pump and it is a chore to refill. ‘Twas the reason i went with 177 for the high shot count but would love to have a 25 cal.

Ledd Slinger, you did it right. The Avenger is a great PCP for a very reasonable price. I don’t know how they do it. You give up nothing to rifles costing 3 times the price. Eventually you will be like the rest of us that are consumed with air gunning, you’ll keep the credit card smoking. Welcome aboard, it’s addictive.

My GX compressor showed up today. Man this thing is way smaller than I expected! Solid feeling unit yet small and very portable. Runs on 12VDC, 220AC, or 110AC with the flip of a switch or two. My gun was at 2,000 psi because I deg added it for the major cleaning then only got to 2k psi hand pumping last night before I said screw it and went to bed.

This little GX compressor took the gun from 2k psi to 4350 psi in no time flat! Auto shut off works great. Started with it set at 4K psi just to be safe then crept the compressor shutoff adjustment up to the rifle max of 4350 and it was right on the money. Don’t think I’ll be hand pumping anytime again soon! What a great little compressor! Hopefully she lasts ;)

Have the regulator set at 1800 psi now to do some testing for tunes with higher shot counts.

Well holy crap does thing thing really like the H&N Match pellets now! A thorough cleaning and turning the regulator down to 1800 psi really woke this thing up! This is the first group I fired after running 4 or 5 fouling rounds then a couple pellets to sight in. Haven’t even touched the hammer spring yet but I doubt I could shoot any better than this at 53 yards with my 16x scope anyhow. So amazed by this little Avenger Bullpup!

Yes. If you can swing a .25 I think you would like it for pest control. That's my go to caliber with a JSB 25.39 exact king for that purpose. It's devastating on the garden raiders.

Because of carpal tunnel I would never able to get any pcp to a usable pressure with a hand pump. I'm using 4500 psi scba tanks right now but I can see a compressor in my future. I've been looking at the Hill made in UK. The reviews I've seen are mostly positive and it seems to be a reliable piece of equipment. Those folks are very serious about their airgun equipment. It's pricey but it would be worth it to me if it worked every time I needed to fill a tank. Last time I checked Pyramid was selling them and supporting them with parts if they're needed. If anyone here has experience with the Hill compressor I would appreciate your input.

The chronograph is your friend, especially with airguns. Looks like you have found an excellent tune. I would run it over a chrony and note the velocity and the current settings of the gun. Air rifles have nodes just like firearms. You should find that other weight pellets at about that velocity will also shoot great. I find with my Disco hybrids that about 800 fps is the sweet spot for any weight JSB, 13.43 gr to 25.38 gr. Might be 780, 800, 820, etc. I set the gun to shoot the pellet I'm running at about 800 fps. Usually only takes a few tweaks up or down to find the tune.
If your gun quits shooting like you know it's capable of, check MV.
You can use a chrony for tweaking settings. You should be able to get a single digit ES if you aren't there already. Actually, with the way your gun is shooting, I wouldn't mess with it.:)

Ledd Slinger,

I have really enjoyed your post on PCP rifles! Your explanation of your journey has been really enlightening and very informative for someone considering getting into PCP air rifles. I'm also impressed with the accuracy of your new toy! It shoots as well or better than my FX Wildcat.

I would like to comment about the recharging methods. My way has been commented by myself and a couple of others in earlier posts, but for a reliable and cheap way to do it, someone new to the game might consider a SCBA 4500 psi carbon fiber bottle. I have three for my .25 caliber Wildcat. They have worked extremely well for four years and thousands of pellets. Some folks use out dated manufactured bottles...I don't. All mine are in the fifteen year manufactured date, and all are in the five years recert date. That is the way one can get the bottles recharged without a hassle. My local dive shop has the ability to charge the SCBA bottles to 4500 PSI which is what is needed to get the full capability from a 300 cc air rifle tank itself. I have been told fire stations will do it also for a small donation...but I've personally never tried that. I usually get at least (900) pellets from the SCBA bottle before having to recharge it. The dive shop has not changed there price in four years...$18/bottle. I find that to be a very reasonable cost. I've never had a problem with this method. I shopped for the SCBA bottles until I found the ones that still had years of certification left. I paid $50/bottle surplus. One can buy new 80 cu ft charge tanks for $600, but that route really sends the overall price to get into PCP's way up in cost. You will need a CGA347 charge kit from the bottle to the rifle...but there are several places that can supply those. I use Airhog...great guy to work with.

I use my .25 cal Wildcat strictly for hunting. I've timed a recharge in about a minute. Fast enough for me...Lol!

Just another idea to get into PCP's at a reasonable cost without the hand pump.

I might get a smaller bottle at some point since I have my own compressor to fill it. I did some looking around a while back and found some decent prices on used scba bottles, but the cheapest valve assembly I found is gonna cost me an extra $130 on top of that. Not really expensive, but I also don’t really need a bottle at the moment with a compressor sitting on the workbench. Although my compressor can run off my truck battery, a bit ttle would be a lot nicer if taking the rifle on a trip away from home.

I shoot springers only and had tried washing and lubing pellets with mixed results. Last year I bought an Air Arms TX200. I shot it for a while with the factory spring then installed a Vortek PG4 full power spring kit. After a good break in of the spring I revisited washing and lubing pellets. At 30 yards there was a noticeable difference in group size with the lubed pellets shooting better. Well worth the little effort required for me.

I am seeing a lot of incorrect information. I personally called both Sightron and Leupold and was told all their scopes are springer rated. I have a Hawke , China made, 6x24x56 on my Tx200. Since January I have over 5000 shots out of it. Was shooting outdoors last week and had the elevation from one end to the other. Went back to my original settings and was dead nuts at my normal 25 yards. I cleaned yesterday for the first time. First several patches with Goo Gone were pretty dirty . Couple of dry patches and 3 foulers, first 5 shots at 25 yards under .2. The cleaning seemed to sharpen up the accuracy a bit. I have not washed or lubed. I shoot 98 percent AA pellets. Watched a video with a top European shooter comparing the value of wash and lube. His take was if shooting good pellets it's a waste of time. I will go with that....no not lazy, I weigh primers. I can show tangible proof it works. PCP is not doubt effective but also no challenge to shoot. I am happy with my springer and a tin of pellets, actually many tins of pellets, lol.

Tonight on the Outdoor Channel, "American Airgunner Challenge". Info says tonight's show features 22 cal break barrels.
