Going with Air

I’ve tested quite a few did pellets in my Air Venturi now and nothing has shot bad. Even the worst groups are far better than the best groups my Gamo break barrel will do.

That being said...

I was in Walmart and saw the Ruger Superpoint pellets. They were only $7.50 per 200 and looked decent so figured I’d try a tin. Holy cow what a mistake that was!!! I couldn’t even keep them on the paper. I’d miss the whole target board to the right, then I’d hit towards the middle, then two would string off to the left at 4” then 6”, then off the target to the left altogether. Shot my Baracuda Match pellets just to make sure something wasn’t wrong and posted a 0.3” 3 shot group at 53 yards. So I shot another Ruger Superpoint and missed the target board completely to the right.

The first sign that these might not be good quality was when they would load in my single shot tray. Had to raise the tray up to get them better centered on the chamber. Never had that issue with any other pellet.

I’ve had some groups I wasn’t thrilled with so far using good quality name brand pellets from JSB and H&N but Good Lord these Ruger Superpoints are junk! They are goin straight in the trash!!!

From what I have read pointed projectiles shot under the speed of sound do not stabilize. That is the reason for the Diablo style pellets .

That is a really nice looking rifle. But come on, 10 meters benchrest with a PCP. That's like shooting a 30BR at 25 yards. But, I would love to shoot it at 50 and 100yd. What caliber is it?
That's what is available to me. We recently moved to The Villages FL. and they have 3 airgun ranges. It's .177 at 12fpe only open sights and no rear bag. Haven't shoot a target yet, but hope to soon. The 10 ring is .200 in diameter, 10 bulls for 100 pts. There are several other old guys shooting $3 to 4k rifles. Mine was much less. I wish there was something close that I could shoot with a scope.

I shoot in a winter league that is 10 meters also but is limited .177 springers. Front rest is good, the butt must be shot off your shoulder with no rear support. We shoot 25 bulls possible 250. It takes a 249 or 250 with teen x count to win. Our ten ring outside is.240. Your required to shoot flat faced pellets, no Diablo or pointed pellets.Scope is limited to 12x. Usually around 20 shooters. There is a young girl, I think 13 who shoots iron sights who is usually in the top 5, young eyes.I will try to show a picture of the target. Plus there is a side match of diminishing dots, shoot until you miss. We shoot this regular target every other week, alternating with 6 three shoot groups averaged together. There is little room for error.20220804_155246.jpg20220804_155103.jpg

10-25 yards would be very boring with my pcp. Even 50 can get a little monotonous with all the consistently small groups. I vote for 100 yard Benchrest.

Are you just shooting groups or competing on a one shot per bull target. Group shooters don’t always do well on a, for example ARA target. It all depends on what you want, small groups or class wins.

I had some of those to practice on but often l wiII just make dots with the tip of a pen and shoot at 10m. At 25 we shot at colored notebook paper reinforcement rings. Whoever shots ALL of the white center out first wins. To get e0very little bit of white out can be difficult. Worst thing to do is shoot a pin wheel with the first shot. Try it.

How many can you put in the same hole at 10 meters? Not one ragged hole, same hole. 10 meters can be very challenging when you shoot for .000 MOA.

Not sure and not really interested in finding out because nothing about shooting 10m with any weapon intrigues me. Put 5 shots all in the same exact hole at 50m with an air rifle and that would be pretty darn impressive ;)

Kinda like shooting a center fire rifle at 25 yards trying to make one hole. What’s the point?

When you get to be my age you won’t be shooting off hand either.
Nor will I be shooting 10m from a bench ;)

In all honesty tho, I have zero intentions to ever participate in any sort of competition with air rifles. I’m too vested in centerfire rifles and a bunch of other hobbies to take a deep dive down the air rifle rabbit hole. Just having fun with my pcp punching a little paper from the deck or whacking a few pests around the garden and that’s all it will ever be at this point

I question the ability, anyone's, who thinks they can Accurately with Repeatability measure a group to zero. I have shot some tiny groups at 10 meters, look like 1 pellet, that is the reason I moved to 25 yards, all with a springer. The guns are very accurate no doubt. But if its not far enough to show error, mostly Yours, whats the point. It's the very reason why centerfire shoots like Ridgeways VBR shoots are so popular. I think if a club would put the Field Target game on benches it would go over as far as getting new shooters involved. I agree with Lead Slinger. I run one centerfire match and help with 2 others. The airgin is just for fun and relaxing with no reloading and no cleaning, ok I cleaned after the first 5000 pellets, which I will repeat at 10,000. At 75 before the end of this month my offhand days are behind me, use to be about the only matches I shot. If time doesn't catch you......it caught you early.

I don't have the shooting skills of competitive shooters. I'm a hunter. I shoot targets for load development and shooting practice from hunting positions.
Here on the wet side of Washington, from Veteran's Day to the Fourth of July, your chances of shooting when it's not raining are limited.
I have a 10 meter indoor range. The point is I can shoot whenever I want to. Due to my limited shooting skills, I find 10 meters to be very challenging.

I’ve taken the Walther to the range twice now. I scored my 4th target and shooting 10’s isn’t a piece of cake. It was a 92 and getting better each time. A whole new ball game for a RFBR shooter used to free recoil. Open sights and no rear bag. A new challenge. At least I have something to do when my wife is golfing. The range is about 10 minutes from our house, and I can practice anytime there isn’t a match.
