Favorite war movies. What's yours?

I like learning about World War I, and especially how it led up to World War II and the actual footage narrated by Mark Felton amongst others. I have seen most of the other war movies produced by Hollywood as mentioned in other posts and most of them are good. But I have gravitated more towards learning actual facts about these two campaigns. Truly a mind-boggling time to have actually participated in and lived through to tell others about…. least we forget.

Zulu - "why us - because we're here and there is no one else" Wow - that's grabs me.

Patton - the only US General the Germans truly feared and for good reason.

The Pacific - not for the faint of heart.

Band of Brothers - one of the greatest moments in US Military history - Bastogne - "nuts".

Twelve O'clock High - (paraphrased) "stop worrying about your wives and sweethearts back home, consider yourself already dead so focus on the mission". Wow - that's how some of us felt in my basic training unit when I got drafted during the Vietnam War.

"Das Boot" and "Apocolypse Now" directors cut. Also Russian war film,
"Panfilov's 28", true story. I liked it better then "Enemy at the Gate" which
is still pretty good. And not least, "Battle for Sevastapol" about Ludmilla
Pavlichenko, as Russia's best know female sniper.

Many great movies listed here. I have to add the Francis Coppola movie, Apocalypse Now.

I know it is flawed, but I got to see it before the release and meet Robert Duvall. How? One of the primary actors was Sam Bottoms, a good buddy of mine since 1st grade in Santa Barbara. Sam, whose father worked with my Dad at a GE think tank, was born on the very same day as me in 1955. We had many joint birthday parties and were in the same schools for 12 years. Sadly Sam died in 2008 of glioblastoma multiforme, a type of brain tumor.

Is Apocalypse Now a distortion of the real Vietnam war experience? Yes. However, my brother, who served as a Combat Medic in Vietnam, and became a film director, says it is a very good movie. I'll trust his judgment as he served and earned a Purple Heart.

Rest in Peace Sam -- We had some good times...

A lot of good/great ones listed. I'll 'second' votes for:
  • Where Eagles Dare,
  • Great Escape,
  • Saving Private Ryan,
  • Band of Brothers series,
  • Bridge On the River Kwai,
  • Horse Soldiers ( hey - it's John Wayne!)
  • Dirty Dozen
  • and add Pearl Harbor
One I'd like to see is Act of Valor. Not sure it's great but has Rorke Denver and other real Navy Seals in it. I've read one of his books.

P.S. I'll add Devotion. I've read the book and seen the movie (book is better). I didn't realize the that F4U Corsairs were used that much in Korea.
