Electric Cars -- anyone own one?

For the 4 years I've been going to I've experienced jamming issues with the keyless remote of my 2016 Ford Explorer.
You mean your Ford Exploder didn't come with a "key"? Better get one. ;)
Never left your car in a parking garage or parked on the street or lot while shopping or working?
Lots of times BUT, it's locked and there's no charging cable hanging out of the side of it as a dead giveaway that it will be there for a while.

I have read most of the thread and it appears "total electric" will not work until the world embraces nuclear power generation. EV's will not work until better batteries are developed. Wind and solar are a joke that create pollution in their manufacture and disposal and never pay for themselves in energy produced. Present energy production doesn't work without huge subsidies. If we continue down this road, we will not curb pollution and will double the cost of energy.

There should be a mic drop on this! Spot on bsekf.

Go down to sonny’s bbq in florida city and check out the tesla charging extravaganza back behind there. They built about a 40acre parking lot with dual superchargers between parking spaces in 2016 or so. In 2017 they were scaling it back but i dont know how far they went. The construction guys there said they were taking every one of them out due to no use but sonnys said they were leaving them. Sonnys had a free universal charger on the wall as well but it was kinda hidden.

Such a lovely part of the US. I drive close by Sonny's every time I head to Flamingo. Not exactly a part of the country I'd expect to be at forefront of change. Any change. :) Their Tesla supercharging parking spots are becoming more and more common. (200 mile charge in 15 minutes whether while grabbing your BBQ or groceries.)

I'm not surprised. A fairly large number of folks who drive distance and don't own more than one car will not buy a second EV. The demographics for fans and early adopters is an interesting study.

Did you know that in 1900, more than a third of cars in the US were electric. The total number of cars was still very small at that point in time, but grew significantly for every decade.

I also found it interesting that old research papers tend to state that range issues for electric and the introduction of electric start on gas were the cause for electric cars to disappear by 1935.

To believe the current EV and power grid technology agenda as "planet saving" or "climate change reversing" is illogical. The single greatest climate change the planet has "experienced" was the glacial period, the extinction of dinosaurs. Cold blooded animals(dinosaurs) lived in northern areas like Montana. Factually we haven't yet recovered to the warm climate that was present for MILLIONS of years before the glaciers covered a good portion of north America. And many are persuaded to be concerned about 1/4 or a 1/2 degree of projected (from modeling software) temperature variation over 100 years, by individuals who are benefiting financially, politically from the con game.

One question here, who Is going to plow and patch our highways if we all drive electric vehicles ? Looks like without the Fed taxes on fuel there will not be a lot of funds ? This could up license fees and registration considerably wouldn't you think?

There is already talk of a "mileage tax" for all vehicles.

The last infrastructure bill included "a study" to determine if 8 cents a mile would be sufficient. This of course would be in addition to any State tax.

So you buy a Hybrid that gets 50 MPG and you're currently taxed .18 for gas, .24 per gallon diesel. Worst case a dollar per 100 miles. That would change to 8 dollars per 100 miles. About the same as if you had a car getting 2 MPG, driving 100 miles.

Would this new tax be for all of us or just electric?

You go solar, and sell back any excess to the power company. BUT, you will pay for the use of the power lines and equipment.

You conserve water because of the shortage. Water Co doesn't get as much $$$ because everybody cut back so they jack up the rates.

You buy gas at the pump and pay fuel taxes BIG TIME?
You go EV, no more fuel taxes paid at the pump but you WILL pay, one way or another.
No such thing as a FREE LUNCH.

Right now, I don't think anyone is tipping their hand. Common sense would say that one tax would replace the other. History shows "no new taxes" is generally a lie.

The idea is to tax anyone using the road, and is bone thrown to people complaining about alternative powered vehicles not paying their fair share.

What is in the Infrastructure bill, is money set aside for the Federal and States to come up with a volunteer program to track peoples driving and mileage. 4 year program 2022-26.

The Dinosaurs experienced a climate some 6 degrees warmer than we have now. Sea level was considerably lower and the continents were closer to their Pangaea origin than they are now.

Would be interesting to return to such an environment and see how many tree huggers can survive. :)

Nor does it have a place to put a traditional physical key. Push button start like the really old ones. :)
There are ways around it for those prone to lose or damage the key fob.
I'm old enough to have one of the old push button starter, but you still had to turn on an ignition switch to provide juice to the engine. the push button only worked the starter.

EV as a second car? 32 Ford 2 door sedan, (enough room for your gear to head to the range) fiberglass body to save weight. All set up with Tesla running gear. Batteries up front where the engine goes and probably close to the same weight so it should handle pretty good?
Still wondering about heat, AC, power brakes and power steering?
So far, havn't spent a dime dreaming. ;)

I for one would be tempted to go strictly with heated seats and steering wheel. However, doing so will up the current draw on the battery and lower the effective range.

Hmmm...... Think if we start using a lot of firearm terms like effective range when talking about EV's the tree huggers will eventually back away? After all I would think most tree huggers are also anti gun.
