Electric Cars -- anyone own one?

Real good question, and I think this answers it. I'm not exactly sure about this, but some PE engineers will know. Big difference in a combustion engine turning a belt to an alternator, that in turn charges a battery that will in turn start the combustion engine. Than an alternator charging a power source that is powering the alternator.

Taken from Google----
perpetual motion, the action of a device that, once set in motion, would continue in motion forever, with no additional energy required to maintain it. Such devices are impossible on grounds stated by the first and second laws of thermodynamics.
There are losses in any system so that you cant recover 100% of what you put in. They have superconductor wires and such that can get you close but nobody could afford anything approaching 95%+ efficiency

This is the part that just floors me! The yuppie morons could care less as,long as they don't have to see it!!!!!

As long as you understand that they are coal powered cars with Cobalt dug out of the ground by 4-6 year old African kids, that get cancer from doing it for $1 a day,
Not to mention the destruction of the ecology!

Kinda like goofy joe letting chevron go back to Venezuela......

Can someone explain why they cannot put an alternator or generator in these electric cars to get some real battery recharging?

A guy using "Engineering Explained" on YouTube has owned a Tesla 3 and has put a lot of free info abut ownership online.
Don’t know what you mean by “real batteries recharging “? As opposed to ‘fake’?
You can not get more in than you’re taking out is a simple way to put it. You have alternators already and electric motors than reverse and become alternators but yet it’s not a perpetual motion machine.
I’ve no interest in buying any car with a LI-ion battery simply for safety reasons. I’m talking about MY safety, burning to death in my house.
Some jackass on this site said “ you can’t be afraid of everything “. Screw him. There’s a thing called common sense, but it’s not common.
Some people are happy storing their barbecue propane tanks in their garage . Actually those propane tanks and an electric car would be an interesting combination in a garage.
Where is all this electricity coming from?
Right now nether NYC not LA can supply what’s needed. Hear of ‘brown outs’?
Nuclear power plants are a somewhat realistic solution but I think they lock you up if you even mention that.
More important is Kayne West and one of those Kardashians are getting divorced.
Be sure to vote when American Idol comes back.

Why early electric cars declined

The production of electric cars peaked in 1912. Fritchle, for example, built about 198 vehicles per year between 1909 and 1914. And while at the turn of the century electric cars had made up a good proportion of the market, advances in gasoline-powered vehicles meant that electric cars owned a smaller and smaller market share as time went on.

When Henry Ford introduced the mass-produced and gas-powered Model T in 1908, it symbolized a death blow to the electric car. By 1912, a gasoline car cost only $650 while the average electric roadster sold for $1,750. In 1912 Charles Kettering also invented the first electric automobile starer. Effectively eliminating the hand crank, Kettering’s invention made the gas-powered auto even more attractive to the same drivers who had preferred electric cars.

I kinda understand Jackie's reasoning for an electric car for what he needs it for. I drive 60-100 miles per day. I could see a use for it if the initial cost was reasonable. I need to ask a young friend about the cost of a home charging system as that is his job. I like the performance and high mileage that a Prius has. I have one sitting at my shop with some type battery problem. Heard you don't have to replace the whole battery on those.

Today European countries are banning EV sales, as currently because of Ukraine/Russia electrical demands cannot be met. I guess heat for homes is more important than the "environmental crisis".

Whatever fits YOUR needs.:cool: Just bail before the battery takes a dump. ;)

Ran into a young gal mentioning she wanted an Electric car. She's making BIG $$$ working in a candy store? :D I mentioned that she will probably buy "used" and a replacement battery will cost MORE than what she paid for the car in the first place? I left before she could get up off the floor. :)

Just a thought Mikie, have you priced batteries or individual cells on ebay? I thought not.

The old Prius has a gas engine powered generator on board. Best of both worlds. Why they need to go further is just Political Correctness BS that helps a few people make a ton of money.

Josh, the new Prius is the same and so are the other Toyota Hybrids.

Once the word HYBRID is used , it means a mixing of two or more things.
In this case a gas engine and an electric motor.

A Tiglon is a hybrid. Tiger and lion.
