Do it yourself Stock making thread

There’s definitely some experimentation involved with dyes. And note taking… I think I varied my process at least 8-9 times, over 12-15 pieces of scrap. I had two choices that I would have chosen between, then I varied one last time and got it. I decided to apply cherry amber by hand wearing a nitrile glove, over a wetted wood, then golden walnut immediately after that. I also cut my 1:1 mix to 1:1 again, with just adding distilled water to the pre mix water and dye.

Stock is looking great!!
You obviously have figured out how to manipulate the dyes with dilution ratios and packing colors to achieve the desired effect.
Can't wait to see it finished!

I figured out that dipping my fingers into the dye mix allowed more control without overlap or application lines. While it’s wet you’ve got better blending I guess is the way to describe it.

Gotta move somewhat quickly to get a decent idea of what it looks like. When it’s drying or dry, it’s very hard to judge. That first coat of oil brought out what I was hoping for.

Latest stock I've just put the 1 piece vblock trigger guard in . Just need to machine up and clean were excess epoxy is left. R plus the blue chucks wipe that stuck to the bottom were it was cover the vice but got stuck. Then out the door it goes . I'm.not finishing this 1 off completely as the new owner wants to do his own thing to it .

Another 1 inletted and bedding block inserted. Just need to wait for epoxy to set . Finish sanding then I will have 3 stocks ready for carbon fibre up the barrel channels. Then into paint for 1 stock and the other 2 will be off to there new owners to finish off themselves .

I’m trying my hand at making a stock via the process laid out in this excellent thread. I glued up a blank and am making slow but steady process.

One question that I don’t believe has been answered is what are people using to finish now that Arrow oil has been discontinued? Is there a 2nd best option?

On mine, I’m using refined linseed oil. I would have used Arrow wood oil… I considered Tru oil. I looked at Lin Speed oil. But having used linseed oil on various projects through the years I went that route. Between the two, I chose the refined version over the boiled version of linseed oil.

Hobby lobby stores carry it in the paint section.

Right now I’m going to just use that. I may or may not add a hard finish. Or a wax finish. Still researching some of that.

I’m in the process of hand rubbing at this point after two polishing of 1500 grit; one with oil and one dry.

With finishing a stick there so many ways to go . We do everything thing from oil to way out graphics and automotive 2 pac clear finish . If I had a chance off not doing the finishing work and BCz was a bit closer I would be sending them all to him . Easier for me be able to get more stock work completed.
