Do it yourself Stock making thread

Yep, I’ve used Woodcraft before.

You ever used these guys?

I thought about Analine die… then I thought I’d leave it natural with just oil.

Dye it!!20240730_095844.jpg20240730_095916.jpg

Love the tiger wood effect. I am in favor of inhancing the grain as @Bc'z is showing. This looks amazing it really makes the wood natural beauty pop. Almost too good to take out and use.
Yup. We post pics of our best work, then he drops a pic of his magic talent and ours look like dog turds. I would really like to grumble at him but his work is just too good. I bow to a master.

Get black, medium brown, vintage amber, those are 3 go to colors.
Black and medium brown make dark brown. If you add red or orange to medium brown you get different shades of copper.
Easy enough
I have tried to mix colors to get new ones. Always seems to turn out badly. But not everyone can be an artist with color, there are other mediums out there where we all can shine.

2 colors yellow and blue signature i used a isolator to keep it natural.
I used the dyes straight so I didn't get bleeding under the initials, giving a stronger, richer color.

Normally I start dark to light sanding between coats to create projects like the mauser stock above.
On this maple drop i started light to dark, no sanding between colors.

I worked light to dark on this project for @Rank Amateur, torified maple vintage amber, red, burgundy were only colors used. Dyes were used straight no sanding between coats.IMG953087..jpgIMG953088..jpg

Here's another project using multiple mediums. Stock has some figure but trying to get the most out of it.
Xring dyed blue straight no dilution then sanded back with 320.Resized_20250227_192449_1740713202968.jpegResized_20250227_192517_1740713197729.jpeg
Next I applied blue dye diluted but rather strong, giving it a worn out blue jeans appearance. Resized_20250227_194600_1740714373056.jpeg
Now for depth and richness i sprayed a few coats of sky blue candy.
Depending on light angles the grain pops and disappears.Resized_20250408_091224_1744128776891.jpegResized_20250408_091235_1744128773757.jpeg

Pucker moment was cutting the buttstock freehand on the bandsaw with a leveling spacer underneath. Seemed to work out. Vertical clamp to smooth the cut.

I’m not convinced that teak pad will stay… but it might.

Blend them...
Do entire stock in amber then bring in the cherry around the edges creating a burst
I’m gonna have to develop some techniques before I get that deep into it. :) This water based dye moves really quickly….

Work with some of that scrap...
Technique is huge you have to play with dilution of dye, how wet your applicator is and preasure while concentrating on direction of application.
If you use dyes straight blending is aided with diluted dyes..
Sometimes just a damp rag...
So grab a cold one and go play and lets see what you come up with.

Yep. That teak was repurposed from a flat. Didn’t cross my mind to cut the point proud to angle it….
You need one of these, I have a very nice Shop Built one and a couple of the store bought ones, They really work great when fitting buttplates or pads, You get the correct angle every time and gives you a professional look. You set them with a square off of the stock, And it's backwards from what you would think, Works slick.

Pics grabbed from Google Images.
