Do it yourself Stock making thread

I’d like to contribute more to the photo collection showcasing Scott Davis’s work. Our paths crossed when Scott unexpectedly joined one of our club matches. As a fellow stock maker, we quickly hit it off. The level of talent he possesses is astonishing. I’ve never encountered anyone with such a gift for detail. Just him making his own thread inserts is just one example of his meticulousness. The checkerboard design running down the center of his work, is entirely handcrafted by Scott, with each small square carefully cut and placed. Next to his work done by hand, what I’m doing on my CNC seems elementary. And even when I used to hand-carve stocks before acquiring my CNC, I couldn’t match his artistry.

Do you have to buff any on the epoxy ?
The first coat had a few air bubbles and a couple missed spots around the bolt notch. I did a lite sand with 320 and put on the second coat. I’m still working on this technique. The first one I did, I mopped on a heavy coat of epoxy with the motor set at a higher speed. It worked well and I got a thick, even coat but I had some air bubbles trapped deep. On this one, with a thin first coat, the bubbles are easy to sand out. The second coat is almost perfect, with the high gloss, smooth surface. I found one small hair on the finish that got thru the tent. It’s so minor, I’m not going to worry about it. It is supposed to be a tough truck gun, after all.

I REALLY appreciate viewing the work of others. It inspires me to push my own limits and try new things on my projects.

It's very humbling to look at the work in this thread. At the same time, it causes me to challenge myself.

I appreciate it very much. Can't emphasize that enough.

We all have to push the limits and raise the bar on ourselves, it's a ever evolving process striving to be the best we can be.
Hell I've been painting 35 years, I learn new stuff almost daily.

I'd never believed that a piece of wood like what you started with could be made into a stock like that.

Impressive!

I used to avoid gloss finishes. You've got me rethinking that.

That looks really nice ! Was that mesquite ? When you set the turquoise in it did you use regular epoxy ? You did good!
Yes. Mesquite.I mixed up some thickened “peanut butter” consistency epoxy and pushed it into the crack to support the stones I placed. When that hardened, I made up some mayonnaise with turquoise dust and filled around the stones, thereby sealing the crack on that side. I flipped it over after it hardened and poured epoxy into the crack until it was 1/4” below the surface. I placed more stones in the crack and filled around them with turquoise dust thickened epoxy. Flip back a few pages for picks of the process.
If you try the epoxy finish, you have to round all the edges. It pulls away from sharp edges.

I like it a lot !!! Looks like it’s 3/4” thick

I want to do the epoxy fill… I may on my next scratch build.i got 2 slabs ready for a bandsaw to shape out , just got to find time to do it all.
