Do it yourself Stock making thread

My wife wants me to do one using Opal. Yeah……right!
I had to do a search just to know what the heck that was.

Only Opal I knew anything about was an imported car that looked like someone left a Corvette out in the rain too long.

And now that I do know well, ......

I'll just be waitin' to see what you fellers make. I'll sit right here on the porch.

6 coats is good for 1 session, I'd sand and clear it a few more times.
Durability will never be as good as a 2k urethane automotive clear.
FWIW I have had very nice results with HOK high solids 2 pt urethathane out of a small Badger touch up gun. Usually on a gelcoat BR stock with their tint additive to knock down the two tone gelcoat appearance.
Couple coats and then overthinned with final to allow it to really flow out and keep weight down for 10 1/2 lb guns. They come out pretty good.
Use a lot of various 2k urethane stuff but mostly high end model stuff out of airbrush.

I spray a bunch of HOK, just haven't tried thier clears as I have a few different clears I use regularly.
Aaron is doing a wood stock its gonna take multiple coats with multiple sessions to achieve a pore free glass like finish

I had a good long talk with my friend during the 2 hour drive to a gun shop in Hondo. Thru serepticious questioning , I found out he HATES glossy guns for hunting, so I sanded the stock with some 3000 grit to knock off the shine. Sorry Gabe.
Brother...
Tie a rope around your beautiful creation.....
And drag the sumbitch over to his place...
Your done
When you get there, ask'm how they like what you've brought to the dance....
1 iota of anything other than praise deserves a swift kick n the ass....
Drag'r home, build'r out, n kill shit!!!

No I ain't been drinkin!!
Wonder of the dog shit on the floor.?

Now,now. The whole point of this exercise was to make the guy a gun that he’ll use. What ever we think is beside the point. The good news is that I was able to sand out that hair in the finish. It was driving me nuts!;)
Ouch.

And people wonder why they may find a business or craftsman won't always want them for a customer.

Thought you’d say that.

If a customer sent you a stock and asked for blue and you painted it red because you liked red more, do you think the guy would be happy?

I made some cartridge boxes for some guys-to actually use-
2 of them never made it out of the house, their wives set them in the living room..:D
So I don’t finish them as glossy as I used too..
This is the last one I made for a great guy for X-MAS…

AND I don’t like red-!!!;)

Perhaps I missed it, but did the customer tell you before you finished it that a glossy finish was not wanted? Or perhaps this stock is to be a surprise?

No. The stock is a surprise Christmas present, along with the metal that goes into it. I’ve been sneaky about finding out what he likes during our conversations. I had his wife and daughter in on it for months. He’s a new Texas friend I met when I arrived. He’s big into guns, shooting and he runs a hunting ranch. He had his truck broken into and lost his truck gun. This gun build is to replace the gun he lost.
When doing the epoxy finish, it naturally turns out super hi gloss. Dulling it up only took an hour. I put it together this morning and my wife put a bow on it. He gets it tomorrow night. We’re going to dinner at his daughter’s house.

I get what your saying brother....
Isn't this a replacement for a rifle stolen out of his truck??

Now see there was this time a buddy and myself painted a ski boat, customer expressed we had full artistic freedom just don't put ant flames on it.....

After 5 jars of red HOK metal flake and 6 gallons of clear, we flamed the engine cover and front deck.
Why'd we do it???
Artistic freedom and we felt it just looked cool:cool:

That's a really, really cool thing you're doing there. Your friend is lucky to have you for a friend.

My fault for not asking before jumping to conclusions. My apologies.
