Do it yourself Stock making thread

That's a nice mild temp that 83 that's 30 degrees to me . Hopefully our summer doesn't get up to 40 and 50 degrees which would like 122 for you Joshb. Nice timber your working with on that stock what is it ?

That’s right! You’re coming into summer. Well, I wish you cooler temps this year!
That’s another hunk of Mesquite.

For a sporter/hunting stock, what would the recommended starting thickness of the wood block be?

Well, a typical action is 1 3/8” and I like at least 1/4” of wood on each side of the action, so 2” is my minimum. Most of my blanks start at 2 1/4”. You can add wood to the sides of the fore end if you want. Lighter butts are 1 3/4” to 1 1/2” in final width.

Thank you sir. I'm going to go and measure it all now. Hoping to glue it up before the end of the year.

FWIW, I sent you a PM.

That is simply a perfect shape for its intended purpose. Gorgeous.
Thanks. It’ll make a good first hunting rifle for the kid. I guess when I switch designs, I dive into it. Must be this Texas air.

Nice work again Joshb. I do all the bolt slots in the mill once I've done the inletting . But hey I do it this way because I have the mill setup if not I would probably be doing it the same way as you . What finish will you be putting on this beauty ??

Well, I don’t have a mill. Sometimes I wish I did. I tried to make this thread for guys with minimal equipment and skills. I used to do my bolt slots with the little saw, chisel and little dowels wrapped in sand paper. I use the dremel tool ‘cause it’s faster. My bad.
All my stocks get sanded to 1000 and oiled with Arrow Wood. That makes them easily repairable.

No stain required there Josh looks awesome can't wait till you have the final coat on and all polished up . She will be a stunner for sure

Thanks! It’s darkened up a bit as the oil soaked in. It’s part of a three gun package for a guy’s kids. I’m only going to get three coats on this one before I deliver them, day after tomorrow. I’ll be getting together with the family when they come for the New Years Ho down at the cousin’s ranch. I’m going to take a bottle of Arrowood oil and show the kids (and Dad) how to use it so they can put more coats on them in the future.
