Do it yourself Stock making thread

I may be looking at doing a stock set for my Contender later this year... I may have missed it in the seventy-some pages thus far, but any tips on doing a schnabel style top to the fore-end?

Here’s a pic of an Ebony tip in the works. I use a 1/4” router bit to cut a channel in the stock for a 3/8” wide piece of ebony. The depth is cut to the bottom of the barrel channel.. I epoxy the center piece in, then epoxy pieces to the sides.963BC0A7-5E5F-43BE-A358-155C29B13A20.jpeg

Finally back in the shop after 2 months. I’m starting a Maple stock to knock the dust off my brain. I have a Surgeon actioned 6.5x47 that needs wood. I cut the pillars and ground down the action screws for an Atlas bottom metal for AICS magazines. Put it together to check operation, then drilled the stock.

I’ve had some questions on the use of the jigs to inlet the stock so I’ll explain it again here.
I clamped the blank in the jigs laid the barreled action on top and used the action screw holes to locate it on the blank. I marked the barrel contour transition points on the blank, measured the barrel widths and wrote them next to the lines. I marked the width points on the blank using the centerline and connected the points using a straight edge, putting the barrel profile on the blank. This is a hunter stock so I added 1/16” clearance on each side of the barrel.0C9A935B-94E8-4250-9673-9E04AFF0876B.jpegBC783F3E-338F-41A8-AFD6-746CCF089117.jpeg

I used different core box cutters. A 3/4” to rough cut out some of the channel, then used a 1” to finish cut the barrel channel and a 1 1/4” for the action. What ever cutter you are using, measure from the cutter to the edge of of the base and use that measurement to set your straight edges.

I nail 1/4” plywood stops where needed to keep the router from going too far. I make 1/8” depth cuts until I reach my target depth. Taking too much in one cut causes problems.
It took me about 2 hours to do this step, measuring everything three times and being careful. Next up is the recoil lug cut, trigger and half depth of the magazine well.
