Crow Season Opener

The story goes that Mexico wanted a demand met in return for the U.S. demand for waterfowl limits and seasons concessions. They came up with a crow proposal to satisfy their machismo. The places I have hunted ducks in Mexico have been pretty devoid of any enforcement. I did witness the shooting of a couple of wild muscovy ducks that were a protected species. They were referred to as Royals and are indigenous and protected. That mistake caused quite a stir with the guides whose boats were full of corn at the time.

I don't think the crow was selected arbitrarily. I believe crows and ravens are reviered by many Mexicans. Isn't there a Corvid on the Mexican flag?

PS Turns out the bird on the Mexican flag is an eagle. The typical rendition suggests a Golden Eagle.

From what I've heard you can go to Mexico for a guided hunt and basically kill all the ducks you want. Hopefully Trump will renegotiate that treaty. As usual, Mexico got the gold mine and America got the shaft.

This inspired me just a little. About 4K rows roost in our town at night. They feed in the outskirts all day, out where I live. Tonight I grabbed the 11-87, a 3 inch number 6, a turkey choke and waited behind my garage until one floated by about 60 yards up, on his way to town for the night. I wanted to be able to reach out, as they tend to fly way up near my house. There will be one less pile of crow manure under the oaks in town...

I think I might put the old Johnny Stewart tape player out behind the shed, step back inside in the shadows next Friday (Fri-Mon only here) and see if some bandits come by to harass my owl decoy. been years, but I think this might be fun.

Snert, get fully cammo face everything, put out a few decoys ( 6 or so) 18 - 20 yds from your blind. Buy a cheap mouth call. And blow it "caw" caw" "caw" ( it's their "come here / feeding call) they will come to that call from their flyway.. If you use a "e" caller.. u will call every crow in hearing range.. and educate the whole group and you will never kill those educated crows.. recc: 12 Ga / 6's.. good luck.

I went out behind the house, tucked against the garage door, using building as a blind, smoked several as they headed into town. They just floated over the house and looked like a very high, Hi-House #1 at the skeet range. 3 inch #6 and a turkey choke, 60 yards or so, and down they came!

I think we've just got ravens out here. How do ya tell the difference between the two? jd

Crows here are smaller...like a large feral pigeon. They say "caw". Our ravens (rook?) are half again as big, thicker beak and they say "caw" with a mouth full of marbles, bass tone.

I see 2000 crows for every raven here.

Well we've apparently got ravens everywhere and they are big. They're protected here. I think they're considered in the same league with hawks owls and Eagles. They and the magpies flock in to eat the ground squirrels after I've shot them . jd
