Crow Season Opener

Crows are pretty darn smart critters. My Foxpro has a crow gathering call and the first time we used it had maybe 20 crows within 3 minutes, blasted 3. Waited about an hour and tried again. Got maybe 5 crows overhead, got one. Came back a month later to same area and fired the caller up and all I got was the sentry flying high overhead squawking at me and I could hear the rest raising a ruckus on the other side of a large thicket. It was at least 3 years before we went back and same thing. The sentry flew high overhead and the rest of the murder stayed out of sight.

Try a crow fight with and owl!!! That will bring them in like jets!!

In no way trying to hijack your thread.. but I really enjoy shooting crows.. 223 / 163 yds.. 40 gr Vmax

People

People laugh at me when I talk about crow hunting, l love it and what I like best is there usually isn't anyone else out there to worry about. If you haven't tried it I suggest you get a caller and give it ago. They are smarter then ya think

I'm surprised no one has mentioned decoys. A few crow decoys, plus an maybe an owl or hawk, in a suitable tree is supposed to really help attract them when calling. There's a photograph of a crow "set" in one of the old Speer manuals.

Decoys work good, I use them but they seem to notice there's decoy right at shotgun range ya better get on them quick and they seem to spot the color blue very quick, crows unlimited.

Yes, they educate quick. Awhile back I read an article where a guy in one day of shooting shot like 500 in what he called a flyway. May be off a little on the number but it was unbelievable. There starting to be a problem again. Hawks are getting pretty numerous around here also where I used to shoot a lot of rabbits there just not there anymore coyotes don't help much either.

You may have had Heckle and Jeckle up there.

I
Love shooting crows.Comes from agriculture upbringing. Started with .22 rimfire, went to 220 Swift, to shotgun when Fla made crows migatory.
Now use Air Force PCP .22 Talon. Have to get close.
I'm pretty sure the Feds designated crows migratory under treaty, so all states would have been affected at the same time.

That is correct and from what I see here crows are not migratory. There are as many here now as any time of the year.

Pennsy has a crow season, July 1, '16 to April 9 '17, Friday, Saturday and Sunday only. Can you say GOOFY?

On the fox pro, I've found "crow fight" the best to draw them. A half mile is nothing for their hearing and they go nuts when they hear it. Full camo including face in a hedgerow and have at it. :D A couple dekes help too. They'll swoop down low on them. I would surmise they think they are intruders on their turf.

Crow season? Why?
Here is the rule in Texas
Yellow-headed, red-winged, rusty, or Brewer's blackbirds and all grackles, cowbirds (does not include cattle egret), crows, or magpies may be controlled without a federal or state depredation permit when found committing or about to commit depredations on ornamental or shade trees, agricultural crops, livestock, or wildlife, or when concentrated in numbers and in a manner that constitutes a health hazard or other nuisance.
Basically no closed season, no bag limit. I like the part about "when found committing or about to commit"

Similar wording in KY, but we can only use calls (mouth or electronic) during the crow season.

Yes that is. Kind of like the no deer hunting on Sunday. I guess they see deer hunting as a cash cow. I know ND does.

I personally had better luck with a 30-06.

These are white breasted crows. I and my hunting partners whacked 21 last year in a couple sittings. Used the Foxpro with the crow fight call. Drove them bonkers. Definitely pests, they attack newborn lambs and the farmers want them killed. This was in Northern Cape, Republic of South Africa.
