I've noted these for reading later after I - IF I - can somehow manage to get my unemployment claim filed today for last week. Seems the website's down....

We may not be alone in our disruptions over this but I firmly think the mainstream media's got a serious case of bias going over what exactly it is we're faced with, where it came from, then maybe what we best can do about it until we can trust what it is that we're being force-fed told.

Received from a 70+ year old house-bound friend in CT yesterday (source unknown but I suspect UK):

IMPORTANT NEW GOVERNMENT PROGRAMS FOR PEOPLE OVER 50.

Due to the current financial situation caused by the Corona Virus and slowdown in the economy, the Government has decided to implement a scheme to put workers of 50 years of age and above on early, mandatory retirement, thus creating jobs and reducing unemployment.

This scheme will be known as RAPE (Retire Aged People Early).

Persons selected to be RAPED can apply to the Government to be considered for the SHAFT program (Special Help After Forced Termination).

Persons who have been RAPED and SHAFTED will be reviewed under the SCREW program (System Covering Retired-Early Workers).

A person may be RAPED once, SHAFTED twice and SCREWED as many times as the Government deems appropriate.

Persons whohave been RAPED could get AIDS (Additional Income for Dependents & Spouse) or HERPES (Half Earnings for Retired Personnel Early Severance).

Obviously, persons who have AIDS or HERPES will not be SHAFTED or SCREWED any further by the Government.

Persons who are not RAPED and are staying on will receive as much SHIT (Special High Intensity Training) as possible. The Government has always prided themselves on the amount of SHIT they give our citizens.

Should you feel that you do not receive enough SHIT, please bring this to the attention of your MP, who has been trained to give you all the SHIT you can handle.

Sincerely,
The Committee for Economic Value of Individual Lives (E.V.I.L.)

PS - Due to Corona Virus, recent budget cuts and the rising cost of electricity, gas and oil, as well as current market conditions, The Light at the End of the Tunnel has been turned off.

I'm going to put this right here so we can laugh our asses off in 8 months.
At the current death rate we will hit two million in 30 days. This is based on doubling every three days which is the rate for the past 12 days. Lets hope what we do in the next 30 days works.

Antibody testing is critical. You can test for the existence of the virus on Monday, get a negative and then contract it on Tuesday. Only a positive antibody test from someone who is well again provides the 'all-clear', albeit we don't yet know how long immunity lasts. Antibody testing has been available from the beginning ever since the genomic data for the virus was shared. The challenge with implementing antibody testing a very wide scale is that, in contrast to a simple swab, it requires drawing blood. But I'm sure that can be implemented by smart industrialists who take the issue seriously. (Those people that don't are unlikely to contribute anything of note.) Antibody testing would allow people to return to work with some confidence. Mass antibody testing will provide indications as to whether a community is approaching levels in which "herd immunity" can kick in (estimated by pandemic specialists to require something like 60-80% infection rates).

Dr Jenny Harries added: "This is not to say we would be in complete lockdown for six months."

and

Neil Ferguson, a professor at Imperial College London who has worked closely with Downing Street on modelling and dealing with the coronavirus outbreak, suggested that the full lockdown restrictions should stay in place “probably until the end of May, maybe even early June”.

Expectations management. As we said a long time ago, without a vaccine it's all about managing the peak load on healthcare infrastructure. That means there might be windows for relaxation when the burden eases. Only two things stop it altogether - a vaccine or enough people get it and survive such that Ro crashes ("herd immunity"). It's like one massive pile of sausage meat that needs to be stuffed without the casing bursting.

Oh and for those that think the virus was a weapon made in a lab. Here's the view of Professor Edward Holmes, an evolutionary virologist who holds a joint position with the School of Life and Environmental Sciences and the School of Medical Sciences at the University of Sydney. "There is simply no evidence that SARS-CoV-2 -- the cause of COVID-19 -- came out of a lab. In reality, this is the sort of natural disease emergence event that researchers in the field like myself have been warning about for many years."

I live in California near a section of the pacific Crest Trail(Mexico to Canada) and they are asking all hikers to cancel their trip this year as there will be no SAR support in the Sierra. All SAR members, including helo pilots, are quarantined after any rescue so their staff is mostly grounded. Sadly one hiker died on the 27th when he fell 600 feet after slipping on a icy trail. Photos in in the local ~7,500' mountains 30 minutes from Los Angeles from Friday, tons of snow late in the season and all the local ski resorts are closed. If the hikers get in trouble in our big 14,000' mountains they will be on their own. People come from all over the world to do this trail but unfortunately this isn't the year for it. Typical for LA it is supposed to be in the low 80's next week and the beaches are closed. Fishing sucks when we have a massive snow melt as it makes the water cloudy. With all the crazy stuff going on I forgot yesterday was turkey season opener.....thumbnail (96).jpg thumbnail (97).jpg

OK fine enough, but wherein does the oft-heard phrase “Trust, but verify
gain traction while our economic and social worlds erode?

There’s no practical way to verify his conclusions despite the evidence he’s presented.

Could it be that some misguided intellect saw in those warnings the good doctor refers to a blueprint for something they then found the means to release in an as-yet unidentified manner? Or that simply escaped containment because an opportunity presented itself?

I have no idea. I’d like to believe what he’s suggesting. Yet the timing of the appearance of this stuff, and the subsequent mishandling of cases of infection by the Chinese officials, leave me very uncomfortable.

You would have to believe they were prepared to induce an absolutely massive dose of economic self-harm. While they're communists, I don't think they're suicidal.

The administration said the models they used were anticipating 1.6-2.2 million US deaths of no action has been taken, but with the mitigation efforts that begin two weeks ago and now extend through April, they expect 80,000 to 200,000 deaths.

Just a bit of feedback from down under.

I live in a regional town of some 30,000 just under 100 miles SW of Sydney. We are moving to stage 3 lock-down in our State of NSW.

I live on a hill overlooking the town. It is 10.30 on a Monday morning. It is overcast, no breeze.

IT IS DEATHLY QUIET, nothing, no people, no traffic, no noise from construction, no children from nearby school....NOTHING.

However, early signs are that we are flattening the curve.

Bit of trivia: I can see "Hacksaw Ridge" from my place, it is where they filmed those scenes.

I agree with the sentiment. But let me step up quality of the music several notches. ;) BTW, for the one or two who might understand, that trumpet rip near the opening just past the 1:00 mark ends on a Double High C.

Some good tracks. I guess my point was to highlight the irony of thinking you're "free". It's all relative. But a good listen.

Some good news: Sunday was a good day for daily new confirmed cases which fell for the first time in weeks. Here's hoping it holds and wasn't just Sunday fatigue. A bunch of companies around the world are also responding to the supply shortage for ventilators although, again, supply chain issues are restricting their ability to ramp up production.

Problem recognition. Action. Results.
