Couldnt make this up

Uncle Fester is the bald crazy uncle on Addams Family. Festus is the wall-eyed guy on gun smoke. Both have eyes that make them look a tad nutso...\\

Guy at work says he wants to bring his 16 yo son out to shoot with us. I asked him what did he shoot. He says "I don't know his grandfather built him this $12,000 rifle and he can hit quarters at 600 yards all day with it." I walked away thinking, "this outta be interesting."

That kid is a natural.

It's not just goofy yard boys or braggarts at the local range that try to blow smoke up your butt.

The current Guns and Ammo has an article about using 7mm WSM for hunting mule deer. The author claims he grabbed a box of factory ammo off the shelf at the local Bass Pro Shop, drove to the rifle range, flopped down to a prone position, and (with no mention of using a rest or bipod) claims he ripped off a three-shot 1/2 inch group at 200 yards with an ordinary hunting rifle.

Time to raise the BS flag!

I'm not saying it's impossible to shoot better than 1/4 MOA at 200 yards, but I know for sure it ain't easy no matter how good the shooter and/or equipment might be. In this case.................. well... you get the idea.

What's with these guys? Too much BPA in their baby bottles when they were kids?

It's obvious to me that a lot of guys these days were simply never schooled in the art of BS. They have no knowledge of the skills which are usually taught by uncles and grandfathers. The concept of -- the opener, the build up, and delivery is unknown to them. They come out of the gate with wild claims about topics where they have no experience. They show no restraint, which is so necessary to keep the audience wondering if maybe this guy may really have some mojo.

It's pretty damned sad if you ask me. ::) jd

Thats funny!! We had a local fellow up here writing articals for some shooting rags back in the day. Well when Glock came out with that 45 G.A.P. He went to a friends store (who was the only one in town with a Glock in that cal. He took it out side and took a few pics of it. The next issue of one of the rags he had a very nice review of the pistol with some nice test target pictures as well.
Ever since then I dont take to much about reviews to serious.

Shooting skeet one day with the local great white hunter of the county and his bride, the great white huntress. I shoot my normal 22-23, they collectively break 12 or so, I waited for the inevitable excuse, when it cam it was great.

"Put some fur on on them and I'd bust every one!"

Part of me enjoyed the conversation....I felt knowledgeable, and all those last place finishes didn't feel so bad lol.

My favorite was a gent at a range outside of Memphis (run very proficiently by Trustees from the local prison). Was sighting in a Marlin 336 with a scope mounted 90º out of level - elevation becoming windage and windage elevation. At 25 yds. he was not on paper and cursing up a storm. Walked over to try and help as I could see he was still using the actual windage knob (on top) to adjust windage (with his rounds flying way over his target). Did not quite make it there when he jumped up and declared "F___ it, good enough for hunting!".
Needless to say there was at least one buck that was safe that season but I am glad I was never down range from that shooter!

I see people like Uncle Fester every time I go to my local gun range. Then I see the one that is having issues with sighting in and humble enough to let you help them and willing to listen and learn. Not that your coming off as a know it all but you just want to help someone that is having difficulties. I have stories like yours every time I go.

You just made my day b/c I think I know that guy! :o or his twin.. and no really can't make that kind of stuff up....

Some forums are just as outrageously stupid as it gets also! There is a well known Revolver/Pistol cast bullet forum that has a lot of members . Some are very knowledgeable and try to seriously help new and inexperienced members.
But, some are as stupid as ground hogs! As an example, when I belonged to it there was a long post about hunting deer with "38 pistols", (not 357's) :o. About 90 percent or more of the replies on that post were explaining how alright it was, and offering advise on loads, bullets, etc.

Another poster found a new way to make/prepare an existing bullet lube that worked extremely well and explained the process witch was reviewed by the most experienced revolver man on the whole web site that said it was absolutely fantastic.
Three guys who had spent probably a year or more in/on a special posting (self proclaimed experts) that just went on and on trying to come up with a good "Lube" and never produced nothing started hammering the the guy that had made the other lube work about how he should change this, change that, do this in a very nasty manner!
That is when I stepped in and explained that the three guys had done nothing but antagonize and belittle the inventor so to speak and should back off of him, However I was banned for 30 days on a trumped up charge of language and the post deleted before more than a few had a chance to read it, to get rid of the evidence.
I decided that wasn't a forum I wanted to belong to anymore!!!!!!!!!!!!!! 8)

Several years ago on a Father Son weekend went to SGL #127 here in Pa with my Father to make sure my 03 Springfield match rifle was sighted in, there were several men with AK's spraying the targets at 100 yrds. when i could walked down and placed two targets up so put my jacket on got in position fired three rounds in sitting position then ten at rapid fire all in the ten and X ring.
While doing this none others were firing then had all kinds of questions about everything i had just done with my 03 bolt gun they couldn't do with their ak's

Yea, heard the stories at the range a hundred times, I shot a deer running at 500 yards. I just smile and nod and walk away as politely as possible.

The braggers I've encountered never leave the bench, even at the bench most struggle to group a minute and half. Most have no idea how to compensate for wind, up / down hill shooting, or elevation adjustment at long range.

Yet we need them, we need as many safe shooters as possible to help preserve our rights as gun owners so I try not to alienate these guys. The only guys I take issue with are unsafe ones and even with them I try to educate them.

However your lawn guy would test my patience to remain civil. :)

I am seriously considering keeping him for the conversation and recording it so we can have audio of it. Might be the best comical relief around. Plus I get my yard mowed and plus we may learn a new lesson or two.....Mohawk Briggs and Stratton stays for one more round lol. Ill have audio for sure gotta figure out video. I am making this much more that what it should be but would be funny...Illbrake out some older firepower to see hoe he does

Had a guy who works behind the gun counter at a sporting goods store tell me that his 204 when sighted at 100yds is dead on at 400yds with no drop. Also when he goes to a match it's not who is #1 but who is 2nd and 3rd. I just walked away.

Hilarious!

I've had a co-worker tell me he can hit a man sized target easily with this a Mosin Nagant at 2000 yards. I asked "you mean 200 yards?" to give him a chance to take back that outrageous claim, nope.. he said it was 2000. :o

Another goofy story was from a small clerk at walmart who commented he fired 300 rounds of 500S&W before coming into work that day. Yea right <cough>bullshiii<cough>.

I went hunting one morning to a local public hunting area. I pulled into the parking lot and was taking out my rifle when two guys walked up to me each had a lever action rifle "Brand New". One of them said can you give us a hand, we are having a problem with or rifles! I said sure whats the matter, he said we can't figure out how to get the bullets in the rifles!
I just said I have no idea either, put my rifle back in the truck and left.

That was the last time I ever hunted a public hunting area!

Or the one who shot his deer at 800 yards (he knew the range because the landowner said so) with his Weatherby vanguard in 30-06 and factory Federal 125 gr(cuz they're really fast).

After about a half hour of him bragging about the shot to my office partner, my BS meter was done for. I started visiting with him about how far he held over at that incredible distance, he mentioned it was only about 4" over the back (because Weatherbys shoot really flat you know). My office partner is a great guy, but very gullible. He loves to shoot, but factory rifles and factory ammo is all he has every used, a box or two for the hunting season, not year round.

I just couldn't take it and began the take down procedure. Pulled up Federals website for their claimed velocity. Plugged it into my Sierra 3 ballistics program (kinda dates this story) and proceeded to show him in black & white the facts of ballistics. Got a bit quiet around then. His shot was maybe 350-375, still a very good shot, but don't try to BS someone who has done a lot of prairie dogging at 600-1200 yard distances. Eventually they reach their threshold & the BS has to be shut down.

Funny thing, he never came in to brag about his prowess again. Incredible how a dose of reality seems to cut right through the BS.
