Centerfire Barrel Tuners/ Muzzle Devices

I can see there is a lot of interest in barrel tuners for long-range fullbore rifles.

How do they work? Why do they work?

Target Shooter magazine (www.targetshooter.co.uk) has a great article on barrel tuners in the December issue by the Bennington brothers. An absolutely 'must read' if you want to know more about tuners.

Erik,

If I may, I have a couple of queries about your tuner.

Do you still do your load development work without a tuner to obtain a baseline as to what the barrel is capable of with a tailored load for it?

At what range do you do your group/elevation testing with your tuner?

Once tuned in and set, is there any noticable change required for different ranges. ie Is there a difference in setting for 300yd and 1000yd?

Thank you.

I do all my load development with tuner at setting 0. I do powder charge first, then seating depth, and finally adjust the tuner to shrink groups as much as possible. I do all my testing at 100 yards.

I have seen no difference between 100 and 1,000 yards. If I have a good group with low ES at 100 yards it will carry all the way out to 1,000 yards.

This is a tuner by Sid Goodling (717-225-3350). It has been used by many shooters successfully. No tools necessary, no nylon screws, just a jam nut setup. Easy to adjust. It works.

How does it attach to the barrel?

Can anyone post a pic of a Loker centerfire rifle tuner?

These photos are of Darrel's rifle at the 2007 World BR Championships in Austria. I cant say is this is the style he is still using, since I haven't seen his rifle since then. I had a close look at the match, and the tuner appeared to be a Schmidt/Buckys design.

Threads onto the barrel. Jam nut setup. Easy to adjust if necessary. No tools needed. No nylon screws to fool with. KISS. It works!!!

You don't have to fool with nylon screws on my tuner either. And mine does not have a jam nut setup, just grab it, turn it, and it will stay put, it only takes one hand.

Here is my long range gun 6BRX with a Tuner Break.
The 6BRX shot really well with my custom 105gr bullets, weather went away on us up here in Pennsylvania before I had a chance to shoot with the Tuner Break, I also want to try it on my 284 IMP.

My 30BR short range gun with Tuner. Shoots good without tuner at 100/200 score shooting but when I started shooting it at 200-300-500yrd groundhog shoots the tuner really showed great results.

Thanks
James

Chuck, yeah both are from Harrells. I believe the tuner/break weighs around 6oz, the other is off my rimfire. I need to take some time and play with them to see what they can do for me. Just thought id share the ones that I have.

Thanks
James

Alex, I buy all my muzzle brakes from them and a couple months ago I called to order some more brakes and Chris asked me if I wanted to try a new tuner/brake they had so he sent me one but I haven't had a chance to test much with it yet. I dont recall what I paid for it because I ordered several items that day, sorry.

You can call and talk with Chris there to see how much they are.
