Centerfire Barrel Tuners/ Muzzle Devices

Man, that is one good looking outfit. It looks like the bigger cartridge requires a smaller tuner . Though I could be way off there. What cartridge is Mianuks rifle?

Thanks

Erik thanks for the pic. So you lock in the tuner setting with the screw in your last photo?

No, the tuner is not locked, the screws provide friction so the tuner does not move on its own, but you can turn it by hand if you need to.

The tighter the screw, the more friction they provide.

Just finished installing a tuner on Monte Milanuk's barrel. This is what it looks like on a barrel that is .900" at the muzzle.

The arrow on the barrel is a reference reference mark to keep track of the tuners adjustments. The mark is on the left side of the gun so that the shooter can simply move up and stretch his arm out and move tuner if he needs to.

Erik

This is the idea some of us Aussies used at Raton. Tuners with heavy mass.
What the main benefit found is going to different batches of the same powder. The node is widened by the heavy tuner.
Most of us use the Hodgson equivalent in OZ and bought this equivalent in the USA for the World Champs. This powder is made in OZ and exported around the world.
2209 in OZ is 4350 in USA. The variation in batches was compensated by the tuner. The fact that Marty Lobert came a very close second in the individuals is testiment to the fact the heavy tuner does no harm. He was the only shooter from memory to shoot a perfect clean. 75.15 or 150.15 at 800yds.
Rifles with heavy tuners used by my wife and myself for the World FO Team Champs for the Gold Medal.
Barrels are .97" at muzzle. Tuner's weigh 1.5lb

Cheers

I kind of eliminated the problem of going to different lots of powder by just mixing them all together. now it is the same lot……. jim

Jim, we had no choice with powder lot when we hit the ground at Raton.
Actually the lot I scored was close to what I had the barrels tuned with at home.
Just had to drop the load 0.5g as Raton, New Mexico is about 5000 feet higher than home. Another thing I should mention. I came over with 2 x rifles and 4 x barrels. All Kriegers, 284 Shehane. At home got all 4 shooting small with same load, seating depth etc. In USA, same deal. I feel those big tuners help achieve this in a big way.

Cheers

Cam, That is a different story. I'm trying to justify playing with one but I doubt if they will help or improve on what i have now.I have found all makes of barrels chambered with the same reamer shoot the same with the same load…… jim

Cam, Does the set screw (nylon tip?) contact an unthreaded portion of the barrel, and is it tight or contact only to allow hand turning.
Thanks Bob

With regard to the set screws, I use 2. They are at 90 degrees to each other. I use nylon under the screws with only moderate tension.
I don't cut a thread on the barrel. I make up a threaded sleeve and loctite this to the barrel.
Lead under the screws is a good idea too.

Hope this helps

I had one of the slip-on tuners on the barrel on my wife's rifle... it was already cut for a front sight tenon (0.750" dia. x 2" long), and this particular tuner (Sumo) was designed for exactly that. Unfortunately I'd had an oops when putting it on the first time (got some of the green loctite in the threads) and while I got it off before the wrong parts got glued together, getting the loctite residue off the inside sleeve of the tuner was a chore and a half (ended up requiring some expensive Loctite-specific solvent and some elbow grease). I glued the sleeve back on (again, using green loctite per the instructions that came with the tuner) and everything seemed to set up just fine.

Until, that is, I took it to the range to test out (probably 3 weeks later, so the loctite was well cured). Had a Magnetospeed chrono strapped on over the tuner... and they both ended up flying off the end of the barrel in about 4 shots :(

While there is a distinct possibility that I screwed something up in the process of getting the old residue off and re-installing the tuner... that experience doesn't give me the utmost confidence in ones that aren't mechanically secured somehow.

Interesting with loctite " letting go". I would have used at least 10 barrels now with loctited tuner's.
7mm's and a 300WSM. Never had any issues. I actually sold one of my barrels a few years back and the guy had to machine the loctited sleeve off the barrel. He tried moderate heat to no avail.
I use Super Strength grade. Not sure on the item no.

Just finding green loctite around here (small-to-mid-size town) was harder than I had imagined. First batch was (I think) Permatex, second was Loctite.

Longer barrel = smaller tuner required to get the same effect, is the theory as I understand it.

Barrel is a 30" Kreiger heavy palma contour chambered in .308 Win using the 2013 US FTR reamer.

Eric, it seems almost anything will work as a "tuner", but at least your's looks good.

If anyone quotes me I'll deny it, but Lee Euber shot at our matches all season with a hose clamp near the end of his barrel. He says it "works great".

Thank you. Looks and ease of adjustment is what I was after when I made my own tuner.

Eric's tuner is deffinitely the nicest looking one I have seen.

I have used hose clamps to balance drive shafts before! Guess anything to add weight would work. If you are curious though head to the hardware store....
