I am the OP, and was rather shocked to see so many responses. I am happy to see a robust dialogue, even if it has gone away from the question of how one manages their shooting hobby with the proposed ammo restrictions.
For those talking about lobbying the legislature and such, this measure offers no such opportunity. This is strictly a ballot initiative, not legislation that lawmakers have anything to do with. Meaning that it will be a proposition on the ballot (assuming sufficient signatures are secured and verified to qualify for the ballot). This approach eliminates any potential lobbying of politicians by the NRA or anyone else. You would have to lobby the voters, and here in CA, I don't think that will work. CA voters will likely vote for anything "anti-gun" and the prevailing wisdom is that CA voters will pass the initiative. If passed by the voters, the only thing to possibly stop it is if the measure is challenged in court and we win. I am not optimistic about that given past history.
So, if we lose, just HOW will you get your hands on 6mmBR brass, or specialty bullets, the ones the local gun shop does not stock, or may not even want to special order for you? Does your 6mmBR or variant now become a 15 lb. club?
For those saying, just move out of CA, I agree. But not all of us can, for various reasons. Or at a very great price that may unacceptable even in the face of outrageous gun laws.
I wish there was a way to "win" in CA, since if one state, like New York, pushes the boundaries of laws successfully, then other states will follow, and then after being tested in the courts, will come to pass at the Federal level (with a Democrat president). In that sense, fighting hard and winning in the courts at the state level is crucial. Unfortunately, we are losing. If the courts agree with draconian laws, then what recourse is there?
Since many seem to be at their wits ends, I expect many people will just disobey the law(s). Many are. I cannot confirm but have heard that Los Angeles' ban on 11+ round mags has resulted in ZERO mags being turned in law enforcement. Some may really have been destroyed or shipped out of state, but I expect precious few have.
So what now? Going back to my 6mmBR example, what happens to a new BR shooter wanting to shoot 6mmBR? Just how will he get that brass? Adhering to the law (if brass is included as ammo) would mean that an authorized ammo dealer would have to order it for you. Will gun shops do that? If not, and you want to be legal, that new shooter will not be shooting 6mmBR. To say nothing of live ammo in some odd caliber.
