Box Stands for Deer Hunting

One thing that I have changed in my ladders is a wide first step at the top. I have 2 handrails on the one that’s in the picture but now I offset the ladder to get a 12” wide step to get out on and turn around. It’s a hell of a lot safer for kids and guys with backpacks full of gear.

That's a good point. When I make a trapdoor ladder, I put handrails on the inside of the blind to help me get up onto the platform from the last step.

Question: the steel 4"x4" angled supports that hold the posts fasten to the platform /base .. are those purchased parts or "home" made? Thanks

Thanks kcjim, i'll check them out.
I decided on what size to build my next box stand will be.. well kinda. I stopped by our dumpster and pallet dumping area at work today and found a nice "pre-fab" It's 6' x 7'. Nice 5/8" plywood and 2 x 4 on 24" centers.. it was free and good start. Love a bargain!!

Score! The hard parts already done for you.

Looks like you used 2x3 lumber ?

Yes Sir, 2x3s to frame the box out. Good thing we had a tractor with forks to get that sucker set & leveled, as our initial "box raising" plans didn't pan out  Live & learn!

We're prolly gonna build at least one more for next season. Man, after hanging yer butt out of portable stands for 20+ years, it sure is nice to climb into that hut to get outta the elements...

Ya that's where I'm at right now. Sitting in a tree stand in the elements thru Oct and Nov has me ready for comfort in December while muzzleloading. I used 2x2 lumber on my last portable box blind that sits on a tree stand but with limited movement inside. I think 2x3 is a good medium between 2x2 &2x4. I'm setting my posts this early spring and building the base on the top of the 4x4s then assembling the walls and roof at home and putting it all up one piece at a time. The 2x3 weight should be easier to deal with.

Make one for me Fredo! I prefer Barcolounger or Lazyboy, with headrest, thanks

There is a picture of it...along with a description in the beginning of this thread.

4X6, with a 2' entry. Total equals 4X8.

Yep, 10' long, treated 4X4's. The angle of those Elevator Brackets on the corners gives great stability, and I have NO sway. And my cables are loose...

Are you using 4x4 posts for your tower blind or larger ? I'm going up about 8 ft with a 6x6 x6 tower blind and thinking 4x4s are plenty strong. Not thinking strength is the issue but sway more than anything.

Depending on wind exposure, 4X4 might be enough. If you are in the open to prevailing winds, I would not use 4X4s. If you will be sheltered in the woods, then no more than 8' above ground is probably okay. I wouldn't do it where I live. I prefer to use straight vertical 4X6 posts pressure treated to UC-4B and bedded on rocks 4' in the ground with cross bracing. There is no way that I would trust angled legs set at grade in the winds we have here.
