Box Stands for Deer Hunting

My soil type is sandy clay, so no need for concrete. Uplift of poles bedded below 42" is not a concern. But it would be very hard to drive big enough earth anchors in below the frost line. The vertical 4X6s with cross bracing keep my pentagon shaped blind very stable without earth anchors or cables. I won't be hunting when the wind gusts are 45+, so if it shakes a little then, that won't bother me.

I like the cable program with earth anchors. I'm in soil that's good for anchors. I think 2-4 anchors will work fine. I am planning on going 42" down and on cement pads. Rarely if ever will we see frost 42" deep.

Depending on wind exposure, 4X4 might be enough. If you are in the open to prevailing winds, I would not use 4X4s. If you will be sheltered in the woods, then no more than 8' above ground is probably okay. I wouldn't do it where I live. I prefer to use straight vertical 4X6 posts pressure treated to UC-4B and bedded on rocks 4' in the ground with cross bracing. There is no way that I would trust angled legs set at grade in the winds we have here.
I'm in a wooded setting in mid northern Michigan. I get some wind but not before the woods knock it way down. I'll brace the legs and may use anchors as well. Just will have to see if 4x6s fit this project better.

Since the government shut down, I started clearing out my new spot.. (joking, it was 67 degrees, so I got started.. there is an old house that fell in last year and I'm going to put it up right next to it. I'm planning on using the rusty metal from the roof of the old house for roof and 4 sides.. I'm thinking, if it turns out like I think it will Chip and Joanna Gains will do an episode. "Are you ready to see your fixer upper?"

Just install windows in the rooftop of the old house...lol

Hunting = the pursuit of game. I for the life of me can't understand how you can hunt while carrying that big box around on your back. May as well stay home and shoot out of your bedroom window. Different strokes for different folks, I guess.

So for you, treestand hunting is out? How about sitting in a duckblind with decoys out? Is that not hunting? How about calling in coyotes while you lay in wait with your back against a stump, rock, or fencerow? Is there any kind of ambush hunting (getting to where you think the game will be before it gets there) that you would consider hunting?

Not a bad idea at all.. only the hosue was 1/2 filled with hay and Mr "No shoulders" has taken up residence.. + it keeps on falling in bit by bit when termites decide not to hold hands anymore..

When I was 18 I once occupied the attic dormer of an old farm house (abandoned and empty) overlooking a long Western PA valley. M700 30-06 in hand and butt in a folding wood chair, I spent several mornings hoping to see a deer. Never did, but sure liked the concept! Later in life I once sniped a doe from a hay barn loft with my 357 Herrett. Now that place was nice (and warm in the winter snows!) I think you can certainly make that into a fixer upper! In keeping with the "style", upgrade and add a blue tarp!

It's kinda like running dogs on bears. Bear climbs a tree and hunter shoots it. It's pursuing game but just not fair chase. There's all kinds of forms of hunting. If it's legal, I'm all for it even tho I don't agree with it. We are all hunters so sticking together keeps the tree huggers at Bay.

There's an old barn that's 40' from the house and it's full of hay.. I built a shooting platform in the gable end hoping to kill a yote.. it has limited FOV so now I'm going to build a proper box..I may even install a "barn door" on the new "box stand" since I found some discarded barn door hardware..

probably warmer and drier in the house. Be sure to warn wife/kids--tends to cause a lot of panic if really early in morning--ask me how I know...

My buddy and I once built a 4'x4' shooting house about 40 feet up in a Chaneyball tree in the middle of a farm in east NC that we used to lease the hunting rights to. You could see a deer further away than you could shoot it, that is, unless you had a 50 BMG rifle or the likes. We contemplated getting one when we kept seeing this HUGE buck about a mile away. LOL
