Bought a metal lathe finally....

Idk i havent looked yet, its attached to a different machine of mine, not sure if i wanna mess with vfd. Might just change the motor to a 110 variant. Also another question, would i be able to make my own gears, i seen you can get dividing heads gor making spiral gears as well. Could this be used to make any gears i may find damaged?
I’ve made a few gears for oddball stuff but if you can find standard gear blanks from Boston gear and make them fit you’ll be money ahead

I've had good luck with 3D printed gears.

Take the time to research and get a nice VFD. I have a Teco and the instruction are good. You tube is a good resource too. I am not an electrician and had no idea about VFDs either. I was able to successfully wire in my VFD to a grizzly lathe and connect it to the factory apron switch, jog button, estop and a pot dial to finely control speed in any gear setting. 1ph 220v in and 220v 3ph out. Three phase motor will be so much smoother and more power than converting to 1 pH. Single phase make lots of vibes and will transfer into your part/tool. I'm so much more happy with 3 pH power. Match the HP of your motor...

"there are a few broken teeth on the bull gear."

Full width or partial? It is not uncommon to build the area up with brazing and re-cut the teeth. Just depends if the repair is within your scope of skills and available time.

The individual items that need repair add up in time and money quickly especially if the repairs have to be farmed out.

May want to check on the practical machinist forum if you don't already know about it. Good info there on older machinery, quite a few posters in PA. Often time folks are parting out older equipment

Look on craigslist or fb marketplace for a used hvac vfd
You can run 240 single phase to the input of the drive and get 3 phase out of it.
Size it for double of your intended use and it will run fine

Here are some pics of the head stock gears... yes i know the spindle nut is missing i already have a fellow that has a replacement

Any chance this is the one from northern Ohio that was for sale? I'm no machinist by any means but that machine don't appear to have been very well cared for. A friend of mine has a Bridgeport mill from the 1950's and it still looks new and works as such. He keeps it covered with a blanky when not using it...

Even though this may be an American company (and we'd all rather have an American lathe) you would probably be better off buy a Chinese lathe instead of rebuilding this one. You would probably have less money in it and a better machine to boot.

The gears are all in good shape, except the bull gear has a few chipped teeth but he has a replacement thats in nice shape and all teeth are good. I found a few people with replacent parts if needed.
