Why not drill and tap the extension and just use it as the spider? That's what I did and it works great. Shorter that way.

The bore is too small to allow room for a barrel and V-blocks. I want the V-blocks to gimble with the barrel and not just have set screws up against the barrel.

IMO you don’t need V Blocks at the muzzle. At the tenon yeah but not the muzzle.

For a "spider" I just drilled and tapped 3 holes in the end of my spindle (yes. four might have been better, but I have three) and put in three 10x32 screws. I feel a little inadequate now. Maybe someday I'll buy my dream lathe and make a fancier system, but I'm ok for now. My wife, a cruel and insensitive woman, suggested that I might be too old to even think about new equipment.
