Boron Nitride your bullets

Anybody using this product/process on your bullets?

Just seeing if it's worth using the HBN! Does it improve groups or what are the Advantages/Disadvantages?

Only reason I ask, David Tubbs seems to believe in it!

I use it. Seems to help hold barrel heat down and lengthen times between cleanings. It may increase barrel life but I don't have a borescope so I can't confirm that claim.

Groups? Good for me but I do not see any improvement on a sample size of one (that shot naked bullets very well). Two other barrels have only seen HBN bullets after 50 fireforming loads so I don't have a real comparison.

Does he sell it?

Yes, it's on his web site, I believe the DTAC 115's have this coating! He sells bullets, or will apply the coating to your bullets!

David Tubb's also got a kit you can buy now to "roll your own."

He's been doing it as a service to shooters for two or three years but with the costs of shipping bullets twice added to his $50/1,000 price for the service there will be more shooters using hBN if they can do it themselves.

My experience with the product is limited to a test that I did during a 3x600 match. I was shooting a 6.5x284 with 139 Scenars. Matches one and three were shot with “naked” bullets with #2 being coated with Hbn. There wasn’t a ¼ MOA difference between the three matches. I also did some load development with coated bullets, and the bare bullets chronoed the same velocities with identical powder charges. Given the extra steps involved in the application of the coating, I’ll stick with the bare bullets. BTW, this info is worth exactly what you paid for it, but I hope it helps, ;)

You confirmed what I suspected. I've found over the years that often people who "swear by" something like this also sell the product. Go figure.

I have used WS2, or Danzac, for several years.....tried HBN recently but have gone back to WS2. I think it reduces fouling....just MHO. I don't sell either of them and they're available very inexpensively on eBay.

Nothing is better than good wind/mirage reading and marksmanship skills.

Let's face it.... with custom rifles that can usually shoot better than most of us, precise reloading tools, and a constant overload of how-to info, we need not look for that 'magic bullet' that will propel us into stardom. There is no substitute for laying down behind your rifle, watching conditions, and breaking the shot. Keep a logbook.

Remember that saying... It's not the arrow, but the Indian

Good shooting!

I have used and continue to use the Hbn coating on my bullets.

Competitions usually require that I shoot between 88 and 100 rds without any cleaning and the ranges are 600 or 1000 yds. Does it help accuracy any, I would say no. Naked or coated, accuracy seems to be the same.

Two advantages of the coated bullets is that cleaning the bbl is easier as it does not seem to copper foul as bad as naked bullets. That is a plus for me.

Second, the Hbn is white and doesn't make as big a mess as Moly or Danzac coatings.

If I didn't already have the equipment to coat bullets, I wouldn't go thru the trouble.

Bob, interesting comment!

Very true!

Funny, I saw a 75 to 100 fps drop in velocities with HBN coated bullets vs. naked using 75gr AMax. Cleaning is a breeze.

"Friction proofing" bullets does result in a net loss in velocity. However, it also results in a greater loss in pressure. So with an increase in charge you can either have the same velocity with less pressure or more velocity with the same pressure.
QuickLoad backs up my statement.

+1 to charlie watson's comment, it sounds like a gimmick. Remember when you just had to know how to shoot? There are a lot of guys out there that can put a lead pill moving at a high rate of speed right through a groundhogs pupil without the aid of coatings or ballistic solution computers. Know your gun and know your load

When I first tried it, I thought 'more powder to get the same velocity??' What's the point? Accuracy was basically unchanged.

For me it's the idea that even with more powder, my barrels do not heat up as much. I live in the desert and often shoot when it's well over 100° out. Cleaning is now done every 100-150 rounds. It's relatively cheap and a pretty simple, clean process for the coating and none of the moly negatives.

It's just a cleaner, easier to use Danzac. It's only purpose is to increase cleaning intervals and make cleaning easier.

One downside versus Danzac is being able to tell when you've got a good coating as it goes on a bit white and ends up almost clear.

You have to take some care to get a good coating. One huge thing there is to clean the bullets with acetone before coating and to have the bullets and media hot before starting the tumbling.

After I clean, I put a patch soaked with hBN disolved in 90% alcohol down the barrel then run through a loose clean patch to get out any overage.

I have pictures of all this up on benchrest.com if you do some searching over there.

I'm all for anything that makes cleaning easier or less frequent.

I read somewhere on this forum that you should shoot a hBN coated bullet within 30 minutes of swabbing the barrel.

DennisH, and forum,
if you want to tinker or are looking for ways to try it out this is a relatively way to season your BBL with it. Talk with Dave Feightner (same Dave from Palma Productions) at the company there he can tell you about it and might be able to help you get hold of hbN powder for coating. he helped me out quite a bit and is a fountain of knowlege. On the plus side his product are environmentally responsible and biodegradable. The "shooter's kit" is what i would recommend. this is where in got my hbN. i run a pretty stout .308 load and did notice a reduction of ~150 fps in speed and cleaning is a BREEZE. the groups were better at the 600 and 1k in my M1. i dont own a borescope, but the process works for me. If you get into it the process is pretty easy, coating is a breeze, but your hands get slippery like you wouldnt believe!!

I hope this helps out, and is just my .02
cheers,
