Boron Nitride your bullets

Is heating the impact media and the bullets necessary to get good coverage with hBN during tumbling and or vibrating? Is the acetone rinse prior to coating necessary? I am not clear on these steps because they are mentioned in conjunction with other coatings.

Lots of info floats around on the net. Do this and you'll make it all happen.

Well, I've never used any friction reducing compound other than Molybdenumdisulfide so I can't comment on HBN as such. But, my experience with Moly-coated bullets and only minimal cleaning, is that the first shot I send from the rifle will impact in basically the exactly same spot as the last shot sent from it, given the range is the same and temperature/pressure also (within a reasonable deviation), which I've found to be more wider of a range with Moly coated bullets N550/N540 powders.

Those were the parameters I wanted met from a friction reducing compound besides minimal cleaning. Accuracy and barrel-life... cant really say, as I shoot .308win which takes close to 10000 rounds to wear out.

Avoiding the need for fouling shots and extended shooting strings without need for cleaning are more than enough reasons to coat bullets for me. I understand there is a velocity penalty built into hBN coated bullets but if it also holds down barrel heat I am on board. A reduction in throat erosion would be a welcome but unexpected bonus.

My best expierience with HBN is in my "well used" 6PPC.
I have no idea how many rds have been through the barrel as I'm at least the third owner of this gun.
Previous owner said 500rds for himself + whatever the first owner shot. I've put at least another 2000 through it.

With N-133 and naked bullets it still groups nice (errr at least it did 1000+ rds ago)
It would run about 40 rds without cleaning before accuracy fell off quite significantly.
Not a big deal for BR where cleaning is frequent but I shoot other comps where theres little time for cleaning.

I bought some HBN just about the time I was discovering this issue.
Decided to try HBN and Ramshot X-Terminator as a little extra carbon can greatly help resolve coppering issues.
Right off the bat the combo of those two just rocked!!!
As a matter of fact I shoot it in IBS and egg shoots without a patch all season.

Couple of years ago I did try X-Terminator with naked pills. Accuracy was funky to say the least.
After twenty rds I cleaned the barrel and could definatly feel a difference in the throat area.
It felt rough while using Patch Out which usually means some copper build up. Not to mention a worn throat.
Swithched back to HBN and X-Term and its been running fine ever since.
3-4 patches of Hoppes or Shooters Choice at the end of the season and its ready for next year.
Patches slide through the throat like butter.

Obviously it would be easier to buy another barrel but as long as this one likes the combo I'll keep feeding it.

I don't. Never thought about heating them. I washed the first few batches in acetone but didn't see any difference in the batches that didn't get washed so I eliminated the step. I shoot Bergers and AMaxes. Other bullets may be oily, I don't know. I put 50 bullets in a vitamin bottle that is about 1/2 full of zinc coated BBs and a dollop of HBN. Wedge that into my Lyman tumbler, let it run for 1 1/2 hrs, pluck them out with tweezers and wipe them down a little with a discarded bath towel.

Went out and double-checked. About 1/3 volume of BBs in my bottle.

Also do not need to add more HBN with each batch. I add probably a 1/4 teaspoon every 3 loads.

Use a dust mask. I feel a little bit of a scratchy throat if I don't.
