Best cal. for Encore pistol

Break-actions enjoy a rim, I enjoy a wildcat

But I do not ignore rebated rimmed cartridges, either

Personally, I'd say it all depends on how far you're capable of shooting the Encore accurately at your quarry of choice. Out to 150 yds, you the list of possibilities is almost endless. As you approach 200 yds and beyond (WAY beyond), the options start to dwindle. It becomes more of a question of which cartridges will work out of a short barrel at the distances you're interested in shooting.

I agree completely but persistent fieldwork with a setup can build not only confidence but consistancy
100 yds has gotten to be a 'chip shot' with a few of my barrels

For me it’s a 10 inch .44 mag. However if I ever come across an Encore pistol barrel in 6.8 I’d buy it.

I have a 6.5x30JDJ Super 14 Contender barrel that I have been shooting for a very long time. It is based on the INFERIOR 30-30 Winchester Case instead of the Walks on Water 225 Winchester Case. (Sarcasm in case you were wondering) Way back in the late 1980's or early 1990's I saw the hand writing on the wall that 225 Win Brass would sooner or later be a problem to come up with. I have been using 6.5JDJ loading data loading the 6.5x30JDJ. I am sure with pretty much the exact velocity readings. Probably 20 years or so into shooting the 6.5x30JDJ I started getting some splits and replaced all of my brass with 100 new cases. I fire formed them, and I am ready for another 20 years. I have had no problem with Brass Life at all shooting the 6.5x30JDJ using 30-30 brass. If I were starting over again and were to pick between the 6.5JDJ and 6.5x30JDJ, I would still get the 6.5x30JDJ. I have seen nothing indicating that the 6.5JDJ has any advantage in any way, shape, or form over the 6.5x30JDJ.

If I were to buy a new single shot handgun today, for the dual purpose roll of deer and varmints. I would be tracking down a CVA Scout V2 chambered in 6.5 Grendel, and screw on a Harrell's Four Gill Muzzle Brake. Install an Evolution Gun Works scope base and a Burris 2-7 Scout Scope and you should be in business for deer and close range varmints. (Inside 200 yards) A buddy owns one, and it drives tacks, and like all CVA Scout's, has a Great Trigger right out of the box. My G2's and Encore's also have Great Trigger's right out of the Return Box from Stratton who did the Trigger Jobs on them.

The original question from years ago was about a Deer/Varmint dual purpose chambering for the Encore. The simple answer in 2026 would be 6.5CM.
I have a 6.5CM in a Nosler M48 Handgun. It is very accurate, kills deer with no problem at all, and should be slight over kill for Varmints. Shoots flat, has a great selection of Factory Loader Ammunition, and also a great selection of bullets to reload with. Whats not to love.
