Want a 223 Varminting handgun

I looked at a couple of these at the HS Precision plant here in Rapid City this week. I must have caught someone in a good mood because I was then treated to a tour of the production area. I was very impressed with the facility and equipment and people. It was cool to see what a cut rifling machine looks like. They make all their stocks by hand, even the ones for the Remington factory guns they supply for.

As a varmint guy I do wish they made this handgun available as left bolt left port but I have to admit I've been mentally going through the safe assessing what could be moved to come up with the $2300 asking price. They make them only to order, so I'd have about 6 months to come up with the balance after the deposit.

I witnessed a fellow club member shoot a 3 shot 1/2 MOA group@100 yards with his H-S Precision Pro-Series 2000 bolt action handgun. He was somewhat disappointed and stated it can shoot better with the right load! I apologize but I can't remember the caliber but am leaning toward .308 Winchester or 7mm/08. They can be had in many calibers and I am sure .223 Remington would be one of them. Warning-Beware of sticker shock!

Varmint hunting with a handgun just sounds like fun. My pick is a xp100. I just bought one in 221 off gun broker and i cant wait for it to arrive any day now. The HS sure looks like a nice piece but I personally couldn’t justify the cost. I may change my mind after adding the XP to my hunting weekends.

Good for you! From what I saw you will be very happy! Let us know what your selling! :-)

I've had a XP100 in 223 with the black plastic stock for years.
Has the Burris 3x12 BP .
From the Bench, It still prints 1/2" groups at 100 with the 50vmaxes.

Well, since I have lots of 204 and 223 ammo on hand I bought one of each: Stainless Encore in 14" .204 and the XP-100R in 223 that Ken offered above in this thread.

Can't wait to start playing with a new discipline.

I had a t/c contender in 223 with a 14in barrel. Shot well but was the loudest gun i ever had. Had a brake and even with muffs wow.
+ 1 on that. Was shooting at a friends one day and when I came back to his home he asked if I was shooting a .30-06. Extremely accurate, had a Burris 3x9 on it and worked over groundhogs and crows pretty good. 50 gr Nosler B.T.

Agreed... I had a super 14 as well and was dumb enough to shoot at a groundhog from my truck seat. I figure some of the sound came back from the mirror. Hurt my ears bad... I blame the ringing in my ears right now on that day.

Nomo, 0ne of my IHMSA silhouette buddies from Ga had an MOA for sale recently. 15'' stainless barrel/frame said was in excellent shape. 30-20 caliber. Twas asking $600

The old style Contender is plenty strong and the trigger is adjustable and much better than the G2
Second that motion 100%.
Bought my 1st Contender in the early 70's and dummy like let it slip away in 80's. Back on board a few years later and haven't looked back. The long reach and snappy trigger reset on the G2 is harmless but annoying to me, however the option of recocking without opening the frame may make it worth it to some folks.

not to me
don't want the look of a baby encore
never had an issue with the rebreak need
trigger on original beats all
that's most important

I would take a hard look at Nosler’s offerings.
May look pricey to some. Look at base price of an XP, then true up the action, new barrel and chambering, add the chassis frame. The Nosler will look a lot more reasonable.

XP100 would be my choice.
Had one. Very Accurate.
Sold it.
Shouldn’t have.
Remington now makes a Bolt Action Handgun the CP 700
I think.

Watch classifieds at Specialty Pistols, it may take some time but those guy's used equipment is for most shooters a treasure.
Unless you decide on a TC, then go to Encore classifieds.

When I was a kid I couldn’t afford one. When I finally got a professional gig, Remington discontinued it. Fate thou art a cruel mistress...
