Hi Frank,
I remember a thread from World wide accuracy, where Bill Calfee claimed that cut rifled barrels do not have the accuracy potential of buttoned rimfire barrels. What is your opinion on this subject? I for sure love your centerfire barrels and would like to try your rimfire barrel some day if available...Thank you

Well, if ol Bill said that, I would buy a cut rifled barrel.

Flat out B.S.! Same thing was said not to long ago about centerfire benchrest that a cut barrel would never shoot with a button. Guess what....cut barrels are dominating that.

Again we don't push this or that shooting sport/competition. The few that we have made for RF shooters I know they've won matches etc....biggest complaint is the wait time from us. Sorry but just that busy!

The other 52D I rebuilt and I will post a picture of that rifle has shot many sub 1/2" groups at a 114 yards. It's shot consistent groups in the .1xx's at 50 yards. It's not a bench gun either but rebuilt as a standard 52D in. D stock. Tell me it's not good enough!?

If our barrels are not good enough then why would a major rf rifle builder in Europe start buying from us?

A few years ago a European Olympic team and a European ammo maker bought Rimfire barrels from like 15-20 different barrel makers from around the world including Anschutz. When the testing was finished our barrels and Border cut rifled barrels came out tied for first place! Anschutz came in like 10th. The only reason the Olympic team didn't go with us was due to shipping cost and export license fees etc. it cost effective to get them from Border at the time. They are now out of business. That was the information I got from the ammo maker who performed the testing.

Barrel is a full 28" Winchester profile. This gun or the International rebuild you cannot do anything wrong with when it comes to shooting them. The International rebuild only has 45 rounds on it to boot!

For example, Jerry Stiller has had sales problems becouse Calfee did not like his action. I see nothing wrong with it, BTW. But a lot of people do like to be followed....

Were making a run of the RF right now. Just about done. No way to get you on this run. Not sure when the next run will be right now. If you want one call and place a order to get it in line for the next run. That's the best suggestion I can make.

Why don't we make more of them. This caliber, .20cal., and even calibers like .25 and .270, .375, .416 etc...just not enough consistent orders to justify running them on some type of a schedule. We've got so much work for 6mm, 6.5mm, .30cal., 7mm and .338 cal. and .224cal. barrels that those run pretty much all the time with the exception being the .338's and the .224's. The .338's though it seems like as soon as we pull the tooling we have to stick it back in a couple of weeks later!j

I for see another run of RF probably around mid summer. I just cannot nail down an exact date.

Those are beautiful rifles and awesome shooting! My question, do you think chrome moly barrels may have an advantage over stainless barrels with lead bullets? I know an old time tool maker who always preferred chrome moly barrels.

First off your welcome and thanks for the compliment!

C.M. vs. S.S. which is better? For the most part I will tell you no difference. Not in accuracy, velocity or barrel life regardless of the caliber. I just don't see it. I base this on personal experience as well as feed back I get on ammunition test barrels we make and we make test barrels mostly in c.m. steel but do a fair number of s.s. and I talk to the powder makers, bullet makers, ammo makers and gun makers on a regular basis that use them. I do have my thoughts and opinions as well. If I had to at times pick one that might last longer it would be the c.m. Why? It just seems tougher. Seems to stand up more to abuse and damage better than the s.s. just based on things that I see.

Also there is a small belief that the c.m. on .22rf might last longer than the s.s. That's why that International build I did a c.m. barrel and the regular 52D with the Unertl has a s.s. barrel. If I can get time to put enough rounds on them. I'd like to see which one lasts longer. I'm rebuilding a 52c right now and that one is getting a s.s. barrel. Talking to one of the AMU shooters and they use s.s. barrels on they're small bore rifles. He feels the c.m. lasts longer in terms of overall accuracy wise and that's why most of the European guns have c.m. He said might be something there to be learned. Some of the rf ammo the priming compound uses a glass like substance in the compound. This will build up in the bore and when accuracy starts to drop off you have to get this build up out. When you clean it well and get it out it will actually take little portions of the barrel with it. The bore will look like it has really fine pits in it. In this regards is where they think the c.m. might have an advantage. Again it seems tougher.

Probably the biggest down side to c.m. is that it is not as forgiving as s.s. is. It will rust easier if not taken care of. S.S. doesn't get that redish color rust to it but it will still corrode/pit if not taken care of. The other down side to the c.m. is most guys don't want to waste the time and money on getting it blued. I will be sending the barreled action on that International out to get reblued here after the first of the year. That's the other reason why I did a c.m. barrel on that gun. I wanted a blued finished barrel as well.

Also only one of my hunting rifles has a s.s. barrel. The rest are c.m. and blued. I'm more traditional that way on my hunting guns. A few of my competition guns as well have c.m. barrels and again hunting rifle or a comp. gun I see no difference in accuracy etc....

Dan Muller's rimfire barrels are probably the best on the market today. He only makes about 5 rimfire barrels per month and they go to select gunsmiths and customers. He has just got his CNC Centerfire cut rifler going and has a Pratt and & Whitney cut rifler going. He has had button rifler going for over a year. Dan is a great barrel maker and artist. With time his name will be well known I the barrel making business.

Hey Landy! I'm gone from work now and off for the rest of New Years! Back next week. I have no way of checking on your order.

Here is one problem I had. Somebody had said they wanted barrels for this person or that person or was ordering some. Unless I have a order specific that references your name some where weather under your name or not I have no way of looking it up and trying to figure out who's is who's.

Call me next week! That would be best!!!!!

If you saw how long it takes and the care Dan puts into lapping out one of those rimfire barrels you would understand why he only does so many..... He is truly an artist on both canvas and steel (on the steel his art is on the inside!)
