Best 200yd cartridge - advice needed

As far as the ppc being fussy and load needing to be adjusted thru the day. That's true. But I've found out the more I practice shooting in the wind the less I seem to be fussing with the powder charge
As I've said earlier, I'm not a group shooter, only score. I have tuners on everything except my Factory Class 6 BR. I shoot 6PPCs, 6 Beggs and 220 Beggs. I always preload and almost never touch the tuner. Wind reading is nearly everything. From time to time we've had folks shoot PPCs at 100 and switch to a 30 BR at 200. Also, once in a while someone will bring a Dasher. The PPCs still win, once in a while the Beggs. Don't recall a Dasher ever winning one of our matches and the 6 to 30 swaps haven't worked either. I wouldn't argue one strategy over another or even one caliber over another. I just know what I see at matches.

I just wanted to update you all on my decision.

I've been trying to get ahold of my Uncle for some time.... actually my former uncle, by marriage. I remember as a kid, him talking to my dad about shooting benchrest competitions. That was long before I had any interest in firearms. I havent talked to him in about 17 years, and finally got a hold of him this past weekend. It turns out he was quite the accomplished benchrest shooter. Anyway... it turns out hes been out of the sport for 5-6 years now, and still had a lot of his stuff. Custom presses, dies, neck turning equipment, trimmer, harbor press, rests and bags, brass, loads of bullets, primers, powder, even his reamers. I got it all at an absolute bargain.... so my mind is made up. I will be going with the 6mm PPC.

He even gave me a nice stock already inletted for a Panda action. I also have a firing pin removal tool for the bolt if I get a Panda. So I will more than likely be looking for a good used Panda action, preferably RB, LP, RE.

Im looking at the reamers he gave me and one is used, its a .262 ND, .050" FB and the other is new with a .262 ND, .065" FB. He recommended a 4 groove .236" Krieger. I have a Wilson style bullet seater that was cut with the used chamber reamer so its a perfect fit. I will likely be using one of these two reamers for the new barrel. Right now though... the hunt is on for a nice used custom action.

Fabulous! Thanks for the update. The reamers and matched die are a nice score.

http://forum.accurateshooter.com/threads/wts-marsh-saguaro-action-trade-added.3915781/ (will fit a Panda inlet)

You can also sell the stock to help finance the purchase of a complete (used) rifle. Try to find out who made the stock, whether it is light enough for a 10.5 pound rifle (LV/SP), and whether it has a weight system in the butt to switch between LV and HV.

Be sure to buy Tony Boyer's "Book of Rifle Accuracy."

I will definitely be buying that book.

As far as the stock goes, I believe its a light enough for LV, and it does have an opening in the butt end of the stock for weight to be added. I think it was made by him, or his late father (Briar Hail).

Think about the bullets you want to shoot in your first barrel.
Talk it over with your gunsmith the .065 free bore will work better with flat base bullets
the .050 will work better with boat tail bullets.

I'll have to get some pics posted that will make sense to you

With the boat tail bullet there is less bearing surface or shank of the bullet the section ahead of the bt that typically measures .2433 or so
With a flat base that has no bt the shank or bearing surface is longer

The bullet with the longer shank can be seated further out the neck of the case this is where the .060 comes in to let a flat base come further out of the case
The bt cannot be seated out as far they must be a little beeper in the case for the case to have any grip on the bullet at all

I'm just saying the .060 isn't the best choice for a bt bullet

Now that you've made the decision. It is IMO king of the hill for 100-200 and 300 yards
If you stick with it and learn it. Every now and then you'll get one or two of these at 200 yds. that'll keep you hooked

Bart's bullets !

So I found two JGS 6mm Talldog reamers in with this stuff. I did a little research on what that is exactly, and Im curious, does anyone shoot that cartridge much anymore?

BTW, Fred Hasecuster apparently was the gunsmith my uncle used. Curious if he's still in business...

No.

Fred must be in his mid-80s by now. He lives in Shelbyville IN, I think. You can probably scare up his phone number somewhere.

I shot it in UBR matches for part of a season a couple of years ago. If I had not been competing for the 4 gun SSOY, I would have shot it more. It rivals the 6PPC in accuracy, but takes several steps to make cases. The barrel (and rifle) are still around. I sold it to a fellow shooter, but he hasn't shot it since. I still have a set of dies and one barrel threaded for a Remington. may put it together again one day.
