How long between shots for best group???

I've got a "bring what you got" competition coming up soon. The rules are 10 shots within 10 minutes @ 100yds, break for a bit, 10 shots within 10 minutes @ 200yds, break for a bit, and finishing off with 10 shots within 10 minutes @ 300yds.

Should I try to equally space the shots so the barrel cools...,approx 1 shot per minute), or should I try and shoot a condition. My concern is the barrel heating up with 10 shots back to back and my group drifting. I don't do any competitive shooting, so not sure which route to go.

I'm shooting a 30" HB in 6BR.

Any advice would be appreciated.

Thanks,
Bill

In general...wait on the wind, not on your gun. Look for a repeating and consistant condition and shoot it. If it's a prevailing condition and it goes away during your group or target, try to wait for it to come back. Will you be allowed sighters? If so, use them. If not, pick your condition carefully and shoot it.---Mike Ezell

Shoot "A" condition....watch the couse a few min before it is your ralay....then watch for what seems to be a prevaling wind..or lack thereof...dump em when you see it ...if it changes ..wait for it to come back...if not then it is all up to your doping skills....if you shoot fast, you will be done before the outside of the bbl gets very hot...shoot early so your bbl will have time to cool for the next relay if it is "real" quick....let us know how it goes...Roger

The first time I went to see and shoot a match I was totally unprepared for how fast the veterans could get shots off. Is it all about keeping up with the conditions. Shoot as fast as possible to get all the rounds off in the same/similar conditions. In short range BR, the pros will shoot all 5 shots for a group in less than 30 sec. Some will do it in 15-20 seconds. I haw seen some of the unlimited rail guns fire there 10 shot groups in less than 30 sec. .....Mean while I am still trying to find my next case and get the crosshairs back on the target for my second shot....:) Oh what a fun game.... tiny

I mostly run 18 to 20 rounds per relay at a match. I start slower and speed way up when I find a condition I like. It ends up around the last 10 in around 90 seconds. You didn't say anything about sighters so I'm assuming 10 and done. If you can clean between relays it will alson disapate any remainig heat. Hope that helps.

Thanks for the advice. We are allowed sighters/foulers, but we can shoot our target. They count any hits on the target as an intentional round. Should I fire one in the dirt bank to get rid of the "cold bore", or just go for it? They do allow us to clean between rounds. Approx 15 minutes between each string.

Thanks,
Bill

you still havent said whether you are shooting for score or groupp or both!!! If for score then you mentioned shooting in the dirt bank,,then I wuld shoot at least two and make shure of the POI and then hold for it,and of course dope for any wind changes) ...if it is for group ..then just get em on the paper and watch the flags....as someon said earlier...if you have time and there are fouler shots allowed "clean the bbl" .,,it will help cool things and help group/score later....IMHO>>>Roger

Roger,

We will shooting for score. If there is a tie it goes to number of X's. If there is a tie still then it goes to group size. We don't have any wind flags at the range, and I don't think they allow them for this match. It's a local gun shop that puts on the match and I think they kind of make up the rules as they go along. Definately not a sanctioned event. Last year I heard that they had everything from a 6PPC to a guy shooting a 7mm Mag. The only rules that I know for sure are that you can't use a front or rear rest, but you can use a front bag or bipod. Seems like they would at least break the bench guns up from the tacticals, but I guess it makes everybody put there money where there mouth is. I think last year it was 6PPC first, .223 second, and a .308 third. They had about 30 guys shoot. Nice mix!!!

Take care,
Bill
