That is a low first gear. I had 2.97 first with a 3.73 rear in my ‘55 with a T56 six speed.

I was running a 2.20 first gear with 6.14 rearend. I soon realized 2.54 with 5.86 or 5.57 would have been better. Was going thru the traps at 8200-8400 rpm and it wasn't pulling that hard anymore. My MPH was only around 110. I could have picked up my MPH and lowered my ET.

I have a thing for racing/track driving and this Lotus 2-Eleven was the best of my days.

These are great cars in the Lotus tradition; light weight and telepathic handling.

I think that was the late ‘50’s 394 they used.
I saw them at a Match Race in around 1963 at the old Houston International Raceway. It had the blown olds in it then.
The “Gasser Wars” were the big craze then.

By the mid sixties most of the B/GS and A/GS cars were running the Mopar Hemi but a few hold outs went with the big block Chevy.

Do any of you guys recognize this ? It's a race track in SOCAL I went to in the sixties and I can't remember the name They normally don't host drag races. Real nice facility. Someone might recognize the 76 sign.
I went on line and Union 76 is still around but no longer produces racing gas.
I looked at three different track layouts down there and the one that might be it is Chuckwalla and I say that because it shows a long car barn which I remember.
This is the entrance to the track where you see the 76 sign. Pretty nice and they had a car show on the lawn.

Back in the '70's we ran a '68 Camaro in C/SM with a 306 cu in motor. 2.97 low with a 6.50 rear. Left the line a 10,000, shifted at 8500 and came through the eyes at 9300. That was with a 4 speed as that was all we were allowed by NHRA for the class.

Thats really screaming. What did your car weigh ?
I know the gears come real quick and your putting pressure on the T handle on the leave for the 1-2 shift. It happens so quick. Nothing like banging gears and breaking shit. Rebuilt the T10 twice and always brought spare clutch discs.
I ran D/G with a 331 small block and had to weigh a minimum 3641 pounds. Ran 11.87-12.0 and change.

My interest waned after Davey Allison and Alan Kulwicki died, by the time Earnhardt and Bonnet died, I was only watching a few select NASCAR races. I quit after NASCAR started screwing with the format.

Only attended one NASCAR race. My final USAF assignment was at Wright-Patt and, by some miracle, my wife managed to get 2 tickets to the inaugural Brickyard 400. Took one of my junior techs to the race since he was a NASCAR fan.

I will watch the 500, only because F1 doesn’t start for a month. I also catch a Supercross occasionally. IMSA back in March at Sebring.

I never watched races, they are boring to me. I did go to some dirt track races - but they were too loud for me. I met Bonnett and Earnhardt when they came to Jarrett's to pick up two rifles that had built, 300 Jarretts I think.

They had a cook out and we were told not to talk racing, so we were all talking hunting. One guy walked up to Earnhardt and said " you have a reputation for knocking people around on the track, how do you feel about that?". Dale looked up, raised one eyebrow a little and said "mister, for what I have riding on those races, I'd knock my grandmother in the wall." That shut down the conversation. Neil Bonnett was very mild minded and quiet.

Kenny Jarrett let Earnhardt drive us down to his farm to hunt in his Dodge pickup - I think that's the fastest I've ever ridden in a pickup on a dirt road.

For 10 years I calibrated the car scales for several teams and the official NASCAR scales. And yes "shine" traveled with the scales, usually in Dec just before Christmas. Crew guys always wanted their scale set calibrated "just like the inspection set(s)".
