CAR CONTROL Needed now!

Steven Kazmierczak killed 5 students and then himself in De Kalb, IL. An immediate cry for more gun controls began to echo throughout the fruited plain including one from our future president Obama.

Early this morning, in Accokeek MD a car drove into a crowd of drag-racing spectators killing 8. Do you suppose we'll see a cry for Car Control and a ban on drag racing??

Hold your breath.

Ray, It is pathetic that everytime some stupid idiot gets out there with a gun and kills somebody our gov. wants to jump on the gun control issue. But no sir you will not hear a word about the car being involved in killing those people. Bill

As I understand it, the car that killed the people at the drag race was not taking part in any racing at all. That car came along after to two cars that were racing created a large amount of dense white smoke that impaired the vision of the driver that in turn hit those spectators. That was a accident, the driver of the car had no intent of killing anyone, unlike Steven Kazmierczak.
But the guy in New York, with the meat clever that chopped up the lady doctor is another story. I'm sure no one will be calling for a ban on meat cleavers.
Just my $.02
Mr. Bill

I garrantee not a word will be said about the meat clever or any other type of knife or cutting tool. Sickening how they will jump on the guns though. Bill

And to think, this all happened in a state that has some of the most ridiculous and worthless gun laws in the country.

Is your F.O.I.D. card valid? Illinois residents know what I'm getting at!!!

He only mentioned that he was in favor of mandatory background checks and "common sense" gun control in the context of more strigent checks. As a Constitutional law scholar he believes that the Constitution grants individual gun rights, not just rights to only "a milita". When he was in college, IIRC at Columbia, he wrote a "pro gun" paper that was used in a debate to support firearm ownership in America.

Also, not one has mentioned this but just like the VT shooter Cho, this murderer must have lied on the federal firearms forms as well. He had been previously committed and was psych discharged from the Army because he was determined to be mentally unstable. Thus, shouldn't he have checked NO on at least two of those boxes?

It appears the was able to get a F.O.I.D. card because he hadn't been committed in at least 5 years and thus it didn't raise any flags. Anyone that knows anything about mental health treatment knows that mental health disease is not like the Flu, it just doesn't go away, it can only be controlled. There's no such thing as I used to be crazy five years ago.

Here's another example where a person with well documented history of mental illness was able to make a recent purchase of firearms. In reality some "common sense" gun control like ALL states reporting mental health history so it can be checked against the FBI background check should be a no-brainer. At least it will take away the option of using a firearm.

I'm for owning as many guns as you like, just against crazy people buying them.

Mike I agree with some of what your saying but I think that's is a very slippery slop I believe that we have way more than enough gun control laws we just need to figure out how to enforce them the perp broke a dozen laws while committing this act and it did not seem to bother him at all.

Rick, I agree that we have more than enough core gun control laws when under the assumption that people are reasonably sane. Many crimes are prevented on the front end by simply removing the opportunity. We can't continue to allow things like this to happen and then say, oh well he broke x number of laws during the the act. We should be asking ourselves what could have been done from a total perspective to prevent this from happening and it starts with revamping mental health polices.

The underlying issue is the failed "non-institutional patient" mental health polices of the late 70's and early 80's which have continue to come home to roost in these many of these mass shootings. Therefore, you reinforce already existing gun control laws by in enacting new mental health legistlation which may possibly prevent these types of crimes by removing the opportunity of the known mentally ill to purchase a firearm from a dealer.
