Annealing with power drill

Muleman,

If it helps, these .308 Lapua cases were annealed using propane for 5,6,7 & 8 seconds as indicated. They are all from the same batch and all were cleaned together in the tumbler. The necks are turned to 0.014.

At 5 seconds the neck retains most of its 'normal' colour after tumbling and a blueish line below the shoulder is just becoming evident.

At 6 seconds and above the neck colour changes to a dull copper look and the blue line gets stronger.

FWIW the 6-sec looks most similar to how some factory cases look WRT discoloration, and how far down the body it extends.

This is what I have used. I also anneal in a dark room so the color change is easier to see. Doesn't take too long for me usually, about 10 seconds.
I reform a lot of LC 308 brass so it's necessary to anneal during that process.

10-11 SECONDS. For Propane single torch.

I find propane is very forgiving. It is not that hot.

I use a Bernzomatic torch with a non-adjustable flame and have settled on 6 secs for my 308 brass.

For timing, I find the stopwatch setting on my iphone works well especially in a darkened room (until the screen goes into sleep mode....) . The metronome is a good idea too.

For a .308...brass Burnzo matic adjust the flame so the cone is about 1 1/4". Spin case at a at a moderate speed maybe 1-300 rpms appx. On the shoulder 90 degree right at the tip of the cone. 7 seconds. DONE. No blue or purple just a nice coppery kind of color on the neck and shoulder. Boy does it work. Those necks are definitely softer.
