Aiming your LabRadar

I haven't had any trouble with the v notch myself. I just set it looking towards my 1k target and it spits out data.....when I remember to arm it.

Tom
I don't feel so bad now, I thought I was the only one that did that. The only misses that my labradar unit has had were from operator error (meaning I forgot to arm the unit).

Acoustic trigger never has worked, not once. Probably because of the location... Doppler does fine... once I get the bloody thing lined up.
It's definitely because of the location. Read the instruction book on setup, you don't have a trigger or aiming problem. You have a set up issue. I'm shocked you're getting a reading at all. Good luck.

Read the instruction book on setup

You can read the manual all you want... I certainly have. What I have available is what you see in those pics. The manual doesn't change that.

I'm getting the impression, from that other forum and elsewhere, that if you have the setup where the acoustic trigger works for you, the aiming is less critical. Others, like myself, have to use the Doppler trigger for various reasons... and it seems to be a lot more fussy as far as far as alignment to get it to trigger correctly.

Have you verified the acoustic trigger actually works? The rep for Labradar told me to rap on the side with the plactic or rubber coated handle of a screwdriver (with the unit armed, of course). My experience mirrors the other readers' as far as placement, unfortunately.

Can you spin the tripod around and use the arm to extend the Labradar out towards the muzzle? Maybe back up your setup 6 inches as well?

Milanuk hit the nail on the head as far as aiming.... It is not critical with the unit set to trigger off an acoustic event. Aiming is critical, I have found, when using Doppler triggering.

I could rotate it out like that... but the legs start getting in the way of gun handling. Cantilevering the weight of the unit out over a leg, fine. Out where there isn't a leg directly under it... not fine.

Can't pull the setup back any. What you can't see in that picture is that the firing points are extremely shallow - meant for hunter sight-in from a bench. My shooting mat extends to the back edge of the concrete pad... and my feet hang over the edge of that (being 6'4" or so). Any further back and I might as well set up in the parking lot.

Mine seams to work fine when I do my part! When I got mine last year I got the Tripod, the small stand, and the battery pack. I new some of my rifles stick out over the bench and some were back. But when I use the plate I use an adjustable clamp to hold it from turning. If you are having problem, call Labradar they guys are very helpful.

I had to do some serious screwing around with mine when using dopler triggering.

I don't know how well it would work, but the Labradar guys sell a wired microphone setup for small caliber stuff. That might get you into a acoustic triggering situation.

I've got one of those fancy whizz-bang rail mounts on the way. I don't have a day-light-visible green laser, but if one falls in my lap... ;) I do have an old .22LR/airsoft grade 'holosight' that might work just about right on top of this thing. But the microphone is not a bad idea either.

Acoustic trigger has never worked for me, ever. Then again, I've never been able to move it up that close to the muzzle.

Sadly, the world just isn't built for full-sized adults :p

you probably don't want to hear about how my Labradar triggered reliably on every shot at Plantation today, while completely ignoring the shooters to either side of me.

Oops. :-P

The world isn't built for fun-sized adults either, especially ones with T-rex arms.

whats all that white stuff on the ground? is it sand like here in SE Florida?

way overkill aiming device. friend had a 3D printer and made the bracket, put an $18 NC Star scope on it.

I went to a hardware store and bought an aluminum tube about 12" long. Just set it on top and stand behind it, and set your aim to the target. Very easy. For aiming it works great. A straw may work unless it is windy. Doug

Well... maybe mine really is b0rked.

Shot @ Cascade today... so I set up with the tripod holding the LR about 2" to the side and 2" back from the muzzle. Switched it to 'acoustic', and...

Still nothing. Not one round triggered. After 5-6 rounds I got irritated, moved it back to 'my' normal position, even with the front of the action, and eye-balled the aim. Still nothing. Adjusted it some more... nothing. Crap.

Went ahead and fired my test string (15 rds) - none registered :( Then I stuck the Barrel Cool device in to let things chill for a bit, and was talking with either Gary or Stefan about something or other... and realized that I'd never switched the settings back to 'Doppler'. Did that, and it recorded all the subsequent shots. Ooops

So... my acoustic trigger still doesn't work all that well - or at all. But Doppler, while a PITA to get lined up... is pretty reliable.
