Aiming your LabRadar

Monte,

I can't help to think maybe you have a bad unit. That or that .308 just doesn't move them fast enough to register..... maybe it has a mph setting lol.

Tom

I'm thinking that might be right.

After apparently missing a walking coyote earlier this morning, at about 75 yards, with my 2-1/2" Smith, that has about 4 times the sight radius of the LabRadar, I went to the range and set it up on a 200yd target. I just got it last week and this was the first time I ever tried to use it. It picked up every shot, starting with the very first one. 12 for 12 on an unbraked 6.5X47 with it sitting about 4 inches to the right of the barrel and about 8 inches to a foot back of the muzzle. If by chance, you don't have a bad unit, I kind of wonder if maybe the way you have it mounted, might not be 'solid' enough. I sure may be wrong on that but from just looking at your pictures it appears there may be some flex there that might be detrimental to getting it to initiate...Not that I know anything about how they work, just a WAG. Hope to hear what the problem was, when you get it figured out.

It might be helpful if we post our settings for comparison.

Some of are technically handicaped.

Try offset setting of 18" and a sensitivity setting of 1 in trigger mode. Angle the front of the unit into the the target 5 to 10 degrees. If that doesnt work there is something wrong with the unit. Talk to Labradar folks.

Does anyone know what the beam angle of the doppler is? Might help with a mental picture for alignment. And does the width of the beam change when changing the barrel of set. Or dose it just change the time delay for the unit to extrapolate the data?
Another Question is is the barrel offset measured from the the distance from the bore or from the muzzle to the sensor or the center of the unit?

I bought a recoil activated device that triggers the lab, works really good as you can set the lab anywhere on your bench /tri pods

I made a sighting arrangement that really works well on my Labradar.

It consists of a brass tube about 2" long, that is glued onto the top of the Labradar.
Then another tube that is about 12" long is slid into that shorter tube, and you can sight through the tube to align with the target. Very easy, very fast. The longer tube resides in my Labradar case.

These tubes have about a 1/32 wall thickness, and slide into one another with a perfect fit. They are available at a model shop or a hobby store, or direct from https://www.ksmetals.com/ I used a 1/4" diameter tube for the sighter, and the next larger for the retaining tube.

I added a rubber ring around the end of the tube to block out surrounding light and to protect my eye in case I got too close with my eye. I also sprayed some black paint into the interior of the tube to stop the reflections.

I mount my Labradar on a tripod at the front of the bench, because the barrel extends off the front of the bench. I generally place the muzzle about 1" in front of the Labradar, and about 3" to the side of the Labradar. It always catches the bullet. (If I am smart enough to hit "arm" before I start shooting.) The Labradar app on my iPhone really makes it easy to operate, start a new series, or review data.

Does the JKL trigger have to go on the stock? Would it work if it was fitted to the scope ? And then fitted with a quick release system, perhaps something 3D printed?

Regarding the lining up issue I just use a biro pen tube and hope that it's not to windy, never had a problem.

As others have said, just putting a small diameter tube in the notch works fine. It's way easier than it sounds. I use a stainless steel straw that I got at the grocery store.

That JKL unit looks pretty slick. I'd be surprised if Labradar doesn't make one at some point. Seem like an simple, effective solution.

It is pretty slick. It needs one small upgrade, however. Stay tuned ;).

On my last range session my Labradar stopped working. Couldn’t get it to pick up any shots. This was also the first time my battery pack was drained down to 75%. After recharging the battery I tried it at home shooting my air rifle and it picked up every shot. I even tried angling the Labradar as much as 25yards to the left and right of my target which was out at 100 yards. Still picked up every shot. With those extreme angles the velocity was a bit lower. I even held the barrel a foot above the unit and it still registered. After that test I’m thinking precise alignment of the unit isn’t that critical. Could be other issues causing missed shots. BTW l was using Doppler as a trigger. As far as the JKL trigger perhaps it could be held on the barrel with magnets. That’s what I use for mirage shield and works well. No Velcro on my barrel.

if there are more than one labradar's on the line and the triggers are set the same neither will work. I had this problem this past weekend.
