Aftermarket actions

Most of my builds are based on the savage action because of the fact that I can do all the work myself. I think the time has come to step it up a bit and build on a custom action. There are so many choices out there and each one has 10 different options. Money is an object so I can't go and buy the biggest and best but at the same time I want something that will be better than the Savage target actions I use now and not just more expensive. I would really like to be able to look in the used market but even then, I have no idea what I am looking at.

General amusement. I don't hunt really and I don't compete. Just like to see how good I can do against myself. Probably build a 30br or variation of it.

Hey if you have an accurized rem reciever you can go to northland supply and try the remage nut so you can mount a barrel the same way we are doing it on our savages. He advertises on savageshooters.com

If you want information about shooting 30BR or a variant, Al Nyhus can certainly tell you what you need to know.

I think it's hard to say that any other action is actually 'better' than Savage's offerings. With the right system of components around a Savage action, it will perform as well as another.

The Remington standard is more useful than better(IMO), in that you can more easily put a good system around it.
Otherwise, there are many very good aftermarket actions(like BAT), but they are a real pain to build around. Unique stock inletting, different barrel threading & finish.
Most people can't tackle this themselves.

If you can't readily pick up a desired drop-in stock for your action, the logistics get pretty convoluted, unless you have a single gunbuilder to do it all right. This is where Savage/Remington standard can solve a lot of hassles.

That is the kind of info I am looking for. I agree, if the stock is a pain in the ass to get a hold of then the rest of the build will probably not be for me.

I know Jim very well and have done business with him countless times as I am on Savage shooters. I have thought about the idea of the rem nut but I was looking for a shouldered barrel that was "fit" for my receiver.

I don't have much problem stating that my BAT, Borden, Pierce and Stiller actions are better than Savage actions. Borden, Pierce and Stiller all make Remington pattern actions as well as proprietary designs. BAT may make some, too. I also have two Savage 12F rifles whose actions were trued by SSS and Evolution triggers installed.

It is not necessary to have one gunsmith complete a rifle. I purchased two identical Bartlein 8" twist 6mm HV barrels, shipped them to Stiller who fitted them to a Viper SS Drop Port and then shipped the barreled action to Shehane. He installed it in an ST1000 and finished. The total time was no more than I have experienced with one man doing all the work.

In another approach, I shipped a Bartlein MTU 10" twist .30 barrel to Pierce. They installed it in a short repeater Pierce action and shipped it back to me. I screwed it into an H-S Precision PST025 that shoots very well.

I am currently having a 32" 7mm Krieger installed on a BAT 3LL147OCTPIC. When the metal work is complete, it goes to Tom Manners to be installed in an F-Class stock. When that work is complete, it goes to Terry "Squirt" Bartlein for a few coats of candy apple red pearl and clear. I hope to see it sometime this fall. :(

You can do as much or as little as you like. It is really about money and time.

If you don't compete what makes you think you can't build a rifle around a Savage action?
I just put a McGowen 6.5x284 on a crappy Savage stock and it is scary accurate. I shot a ladder test with a 2 grain spread at 100 yards and the entire group was .404. I haven't shot a group with all the same powder charge yet but man that thing really shoots. It is the magnum contour barrel not even a heavy barrel.
Try a heavy barrel in the 30br and you'd probable have a ragged hole group. The barrel was under 300 bucks from sinman on the Savage shooter forum.
How much better do you want to shoot?

My recommendation would be for one that has the 700 foot print. This gives you lots of flexibility for stock choices, rings/bases, etc, etc.

The Borden Alpine and Kelbly Atlas would be my first two picks. The Atlas is pretty slick in that Kelbly's offers a bushing for the tenon that will allow you to use any barrel threaded for a Panda. This opens up lots more possibilities, as there are always lots of take off BR barrels for Pandas in 6PPC, the BR's, etc. for reasonable prices.

Sounds like a fun project. :) -Al

Take a look at Shilens new actions that they came out with last year. I just received a new barreled action from them two weeks ago in 25-06 havn't shot it yet, i just took it the smith today for a bedding job in an old 40x stock I had here. But anyhow what it is is a Stiller Predator (700 footprint) with shilens name on it and it has a floating bolt head and barrel nut, it uses savage small shank barrels. This is the first custom action that I have had any experience with and I am very pleased with it, can't wait to see how it shoots. I consider myself a novice shooter/reloader and wanted something nicer to play with that was versatile with stock choices and such and also to be able to swap barrels by myself in the future.

I know I can build on a savage action as I have done it 10 or 12 times. How many times can you eat peanut butter and jelly sandwiches before you get tired of it? Sometimes you need to have some pastrami and swiss with brown mustard on good rye bread, know what I mean.

Do you have any pics you could post of your Shilen action(none on Shilen's site)?
What trigger options are there(other than Shilen)?
Thanks

I have pictures I can email you, I cant figure out how to get my pics to download to this forum. Shilens facebook page has some decent pictures. It uses 700 triggers.

The major differences between the Predator and Shilen actions are the threads that the barrel screws into, and the bolt head. they both fit in the same stocks and take any trigger that will fit a Remington.

Shilen's barreled action is shown on their website. It will use any Remington style trigger.

I vote for one of the 700 clones. Lots of flexability as to stocks etc. My current favorite is the Surgeon 591. I have two and really like them both.
