7mm PRC?

Not sure I follow. Your not gaining anything going from a 284 to a 7mm PRC or 6.8 Western of any significance. Kinda why IMO it's not worth jumping into a magnum bolt action. Opinions vary of course. For me it just wasn't worth it for what I wanted.
You would certainly see higher velocity from a 7prc than with a strait 284. Its capacity would run the same as shehane which nets about 100 fps over the strait 284. Combine that with a larger case web on 7 prc and even larger gaps are likely possible before primer pockets loosen. That combined with the better fit in the 3.1" wyatts mag makes it quite appealing from a velocity improvement perspective.

Now I'm not arguing against 162s and 168s out of a strait 284. Great combos. I do think 7 prc would net significantly more performance out of a 3.1" mag.

Definitely it would. The difference between the 6.5-284 and 6.5PRC isn't much. Definitely not 100 fps. That's where my velocity difference came from. Shooting with a buddy, his PRC isn't but 55-60 fps different than my 284 parent case. We both could get much higher velocities but with pressure in both, were only 60 fps apart. I'd think the 7mm would be the same. Yes the 3.1 will help but I'm very happy with 3000 in my 284 running RL17. I also like the DBM fed platform and can only run 2.980 OAL. I'd definitely chose the 284 over the 7PRC for the short action. 6.5 PRC- 68.8 grains/6.5-284- 68.3 grains. H2O. Nearly identical.

comparing nosler load data for 6.5-284 and 6.5 prc the two powders they have in common for 140 grain data are imr4831 and reloader 22. Both of which gave the 6.5prc a clean 100+ fps over the 6.5-284 with the same barrel length. Their data also indicates a 4 grain difference in case capacity with 140 grain bullets. Hodgdons data from with the same bullet and powders indicates an average velocity increase in the 6.5 prc of 125 fps with the same barrel length. These both mirror the data I posted above about peterson 6.5 prc brass giving just over 3 grains more capacity than petersons 284.

I feel confident in saying if you are shooting lapua vs lapua or peterson vs peterson brass you would see a difference in max velocity of 100+ fps in 7 prc vs 284. I would bet a lot of money on that. Its probably closer to 150 if you're constrained to 3.1 mag length and trying to shoot 180 grain bullets with h4831.

There are pros and cons to each.
284 pros are its a know performer, doesn't have to modify his bolt, and everyone and their grandmother has a 284 reamer.
cons slower and case life might be less at the same pressures due to primer pockets opening faster.

7 prc pros more velocity, fewer mag length issues especially if turning brass.
cons unknown performance , bolt mod needed, and 7 prc reamers are harder to come by.

But man if you squint a little 7 prc starts to look like 7 saum but with brass made by peterson and lapua instead of adg and norma. An accurate description of its raw specs would be "its a shorter shehane with a stronger case head." I doubt it would perform poorly if properly set up.

I'm only speaking from a reloaders perspective. I think there much closer when loads are customized or tailored for the rifle.

I reached out to JGC as a recommendation from 284winner. Here is the reamer cartridge drawing for a 7/6.5 prc they had on hand already.

Thought I'd share to see everyone's thoughts.

I would want more freebore.
Definitely fit the freebore to bullet intended use. For me if the decision isn't known and possibly 175/180s may be in the future, throat the chamber for them rather than the 160s. I did it with my LA284 and shot both 180 and 160 class and they both shot very well. Hornady bullets love to jump so no disadvantage for me.

Definitely a SA cartridge and no worries about fitment in SA magazines with any bullets
Fuji's, you mean? Rather interesting, although most of the load testing has been on very fleek, less friction bullets.

The .284 is very very interesting and I'm not sure honestly what a 7/6.5 prc, would add, if anything.

Page one post #5 :)

As I mentioned earlier, if you want to build some kind of short mag I think I'd skip past necking up the 6.5PRC case and go with the SAUM or WSM instead.

Yes his 284 short(SA). Some sat the PRC offers more performance, personally I haven't seen enough to make it worth getting into a magnum action if you don't already have one. I'm a .284 win guy. They flat shoot accuracy. Kinda why so many dominate the competition world today. Not sure I've seen any 7CM or variants in numbers competing. If you haven't decided on an action yet, step into the WSM and be over it. Offers much better performance.

I have the remington action just laying around or I would go wsm. I'm not opposed to another rifle but if I do I'd probably just go 7 mag and be done haha

7 (cough) Sherman

I was running PMs back and forth with Robin Ardoin.
Robin gets on the board from time to time. Robin is a
F-Class Master and High Master. A few years back he
was shooting the 6.5x55AI, then switched to the 284
Winchester, which most were running. If I remember
my story correctly, His buddy chambered up the new
7 Sherman and shot great scores. Robin dumped the
the 284 and went with the Sherman. Robin sold me all
his 284 brass which is what I used to make my SA284
brass. If needing any further Info, there is a website
for the Sherman cartridges. and I'm sure if you sent a
PM to Robin, he'll steer ya' straight.

The nice thing about a Rem 700 is they are so easy to modify and every smith out there can work on them. If you're a motorhead this will make sense but a Rem 700 is like a small block Chevy, easily modified, tons of aftermarket parts, and just about anyone can make one run well.

I nearly always have either a SA or LA trued Rem 700 on the shelf ready to go when I get the hankering for a new build. My last was a 6CM so I'm down to just a LA rem 700.

The sherman is nice, the brass price isn't though.
