6x45 shooters and questions.

So I posted on here a couple weeks ago asking for some cartridges that people would choose with a .223 bolt face.

Was unaware of the 6x45/6mm-223 but have done some research on it and it seems like a great choice for my needs.

If anyone could answer any of these I’d really appreciate it. Can’t find much info on them.

Questions:

With a 24” barrel could I get 80 grain dominators or other 80grainers to reach 2900-3000fps?

What is brass life like?

What’s your favorite powder/bullet combo.

And finally how accurate is your rig?

Thanks fellas!

Following with interest.

I’ve got a Tikka at the gunsmith’s being rebarrelled to 6x45 at the moment.
I plan on launching Sierra 85 hpbt and Hornady 87 hpbt projectiles .
I have a Waters magazine that allows long cartridge oal and my research suggested to take that into consideration if you really want to maximise performance from the small case capacity.

I’m also proud to know it was me who first suggested the 6x45 on your original thread .

@5spd is a wealth of knowledge on this cartridge he did a lot of extensive testing and shooting and has compiled great load data that i work from.
Yes mid 2900's is very doable. I'm running a 24" BHW upper
I bought 2 boxes of Swift brass, 5 hits on it. Besides 10 pieces lost to the weeds and bushes all brass is still solid with tight pockets.
As far as bullets I've shot a lot of Bart's Originals, and Ultras in 68gr.
My 2 favorites are 80gr Dominator, and 70gr Nosler Varmintgedon.
Dominator is pushed by W748
Varmintgedons IMR 4895

I run a savage model 11 with a 22" Black Hole Weaponry barrel
I use remington brass with 8208 for powder. Mine loves the 70 gr sierra blitz and the 75 gr hollowpoint. For deer i use the sierra 85 gr varminter bullet (at lower speeds this bullet performs like a soft point)

I have a 6X45 chambered Rem 700(Pac-Nor Barrel), shooting 80grn. Ballistic Tip Bullets at 2996fps & the Sierra #1515 Varminter Bullets at 2998fps. Both are loaded with 27.0 grains of IMR 8208XBR Powder with outstanding accuracy.

In using a 22in barrel with 58 vmax. I settled on a load using w748 since i have a lot of that powder. Im getting 3,025 fps. I never chronograph untill i settled on an accurate load. I know i could push it more but care about accuracy more. I did try N133 and it was better accuracy but at that time i could not find any more yo use. I also tried 75 vmax and it loved N133. Could not comment on brass life yet, i think im at about 350 rounds down it so far. Accuracy is just under 1/2 in at 100 yards. I built it knowing i would be using mix head stamp brass to see what i could get out of it. I know that will affect things but so far it does pretty good for no dedicated brass.

I have played with the 6-223/6x45/6TCU for longer than I like to admit. H335 has been my go to powder for speed and accuracy. I would try some 8208 if I could get my hands on some!

I didn’t seem out any Lapua 223 brass the last build I did. I got my hands on som LC virgin brass. I have stepped on it pretty hard with no I’ll effects showing. Yeah, I will admit to crossing the line on pressure.
The speed you seek should be attainable, though I would opt for a barrel as long as you can put up with, 28”+.

There was a huge page on 6-223/6x45 at predator masters. They have changed formats, hope that was not lost.

I did a 6x45 on a RAR action, with a Preferred Barrel @ 24", don't remember any speeds, etc., at the moment but it basically shot every combo I put in it very well, from the 58g vmax up to the 70g TNT HP's. All rounds are loaded to mag length and works very well.

I have never owned or shot one, and by all reports the 6x45 is a great cartridge. One I would be proud to own, and in an AR platform, may won one. But all it would take to make a 6BR is a smith to open the bolt face. To me that is a no brainer. But people all think differently, thats why them make mopeds as well as Hayabusa's.

Ive had one on a Rem 600 since the 1990s that PacNor rebarreled for me. Very accurate with 55gr Nosler and 58gr Vmax, I use it for coyote hunting and it has never let me down, a little hard on fur if I get close to the edges.

I also built a 6mm-204 which was faster and accurate but the barrels is now on the barrel rack and the 6x45 does all my 6mm work.

I have a 6x45 on a 700 Rem X-caliber nut barrel most fun rifle I have 70 gr speer tnt at 3100 n-135 or H4895, there are 1100 rounds on this barrel, and the bore scope shows very little wear.

@Bc'z holy crap. Thank you. It downloaded. Lot of good info on there. Speeds seems rather slow with the 80s though. Couple had em in the 2800-2900 range though.
Can you touch/jam and still feed through a magazine with the 80s?

@ebb i was thinking the same thing, just getting a different bolt face, but I’m going to make this a repeater in a chassis. Also I guess brass availability wasn’t a concern but there’s a ton of .223 and less powder. Not much, but a little less. Don’t make me second guess myself and regret this! Haha

I’ve had a couple 6x45’s. Super fun little cartridge. 80’s should go 3k without any problems in a bolt gun. It’s very accurate and easy to load for. The only powders I played with were Varget, H4895 and H Ball C2. All were accurate but H4895 can be finicky as far as loads that look good to loosing primer pockets without any warning if your load is on the warmer side.

I highly recommend the 6x45 you’ll have a lot of fun with it!

I am sourcing my last few parts for a 6x45 bolt gun. Its a caliber I've always wanted. I've had a savage Hogue stock laying around for a few years. Two weeks ago, I found a Savage prefit Shaw barrel at gun shack for $200. Then I found a local 223 doner action, and I'm off. The barrel is a 26" varmint barrel, but it will be cut down to 20", maybe even 18". Sure. I'll lose 150fps, but I'm not worried about that. This will be a handy little deer rifle for the PA woods, and this round will still be plenty for a 200 yard shot at most. If I'm feeling froggy, I might even have the barrel threaded. Really looking forward to the build!

Good to hear! Did you have to load the 80s at mag length or could you touch/jam them?
