i want to build a 6mm hunting rifle and want be able to shoot long with it. mostly a coyote rifle. Im really leaning towards a 6xc heard good things about them. Whats pros and cons? would a diff caliber be better? not really wanting to go .243 i think its more overbore than other choices. Thx for input

What do you call long range? Larry

I have two 6XC's and love them..pro's good Norma brass available, easy to load for, accurate and enough Velocity to get the job done..I have taken seven whitetail's from 40 yards to 500 yards and I am quite sure it will get the job done at much further ranges. I guess really nothing the 243 guy's haven't been saying for a l-o-n-g time. I just like the XC case better than the 243 case. Both of mine have been 6BR accurate but with 243 speed or even more. One rifle I have a good load with a 105VLD at 3,150 FPS out of a 26" tube and the other rifle is a 7 twist with a 115 VLD at 3,100 FPS. both will shoot in the mid .300's at 200 yards and have been extremely accurate and easy to make clean hits out to 700 yards for me.
I have been working on my 1,000 yard skills but 500 is a chip shot and 700 is consistently easy. But I know a few guy's with .243's and they are as accurate as my XC so you just kind of have to go with what you like. I think the XC is a great cartridge and would have my vote.

That's what I want. Wanting to shoot the 105 or 107 and wanting good speed and good accuracy. Thx for input

I wanna be able to hit 1000 with it I have bigger guns for further
Ok I would recommend a 6mm RSM you will need to send 115 bullets 3600 pls fps To work at 1000 . Or know the exact yardage. Bullet drop from 500 yd on is the problem without knowing the exact yartage . Good luck Larry

I think any of the 6mm's you have there would work excellent for coyotes and not to get off the 6mm topic but in my opinion the 6's are very hard on fur. I know you said you were leanin away fro the 243 cause it's overbore so you probably won't care much about this but my 22x243 crankin a 80gr Berger at 3500 drops the calf killers deader than a door nail and way easier on fur. Furthest I've smoked a coyote is touch over 800 and they ain't got no wind left to go nowhere. I got bout 950 rounds through mine and it still shoots really good. The heavy 6mm bullets do better in the wind but I really like my speed and the 80's for coyotes. Sorry to get off the 6mm question but now you make me wish it was gonna snow cause I want to go coyote huntin. It's way to hot to go rite now.

I shoot a 243 AI. I started with 105 bergers with first barrel. Accurate and fast. Easy 1100 yard shots on 6 inch plates. Moved up to 115 DTACs. I lost a bit of velocity but everybit as accurate. I'm not sure about the other 6mm cases but you can't get much easier to form cases or load for. I have a 6-284 as well. Again super fast, easy to load, and super accurate.

6XC. You won't regret it. H4350 with a DTAC or 105 Hybrid. I'm happy with the Norma brass.

6 XC or 6x47 Lapua

easy.

I shoot the 6 XC.

Now, come to Jesus time.

In the 6 XC with 105-107 bullets, I shoot 39-39.5g of H4350 powder. IN the 243 win, I shoot 41.5g of H4350 powder.

So, choose your poison.

6xc and 6x47L are kissing cousins.

Seeing more clearly now?

Lol no problem I'm
Actually thinking now just doing .243 it's more common

What kinda barrel life on average is .243 vs 6xc. I'm kinda thinking .243 now cuz it's more common. What kinda velocity can I get with 107 out of .243

I had a 6 BR-DX in a Krieger 8 twist .236 bbl set back and rechambered in a straight 243 throated to where the 105 VLDH seated at 2.840 it is 27.25" long,,shooting CCI 200 primers and 41.5 H4350 in WW cases it avg 3200 fps and shoots very well,,with 100 yard zero it is 21.75 MOA to 1,000 yards,,

I got over 3300 fps with some other slower powders but accuracy on long strings was erratic

I really like the 243win.

A no frills cartridge, and it can certainly shoot.

Pic of a 5-shot group from today's range trip.

330 yards
107smk
Win. Brass
210M
42.9gr H-4831
2.3" to ogive (2.845" I think)
2,942 fps agv.

This ain't no benchrest gun.
Savage 11 short action, Shilen 243w Pre-fit, MDT HS3 chassis, Bush. XRS glass, Timney trigger.

Yes, this was my best group of the day, my worst measured 1.74" at the same 330 yards.
Yeah, it rained a lil and was a warm humid day.

Barrel has around 1,200 rounds through it and I get the barrel stinking hot all the time. It's a bull 1" at the muzzle and is still slightly warm when I get home from the range, a 45 minute drive.

Just saying, the 243w is no modern nor efficient nor uber accurate cartridge, but it can shoot, it can be fast, and will do whatever you need it to do, within reason.
