6CM testing Results

I used 49.0 gns of H-1000 under a 115 and Lonnie used Berger 105 Hybrids and (I think) H-1000.

Joe Hendrick's first post on 6CM testing was on 9/1/05.
At that time, Joe and a few other shooters that were willing to help him run tests, ran the 6CM thru the ringer, all before he posted on his findings. Results were outstanding, barrel life was greater then expected, accuracy equalled the 6XC.

My barrel with over 3500 rounds down it shoots under .5 moa at longrange. I consider my self to be an ok shooter. I also believe that many of you on this site that ask skeptical questions are afar better shooter then I am. That being said, if I could somehow let you shoot this 1 of mine, you'd build 1.

I have shot this barrel and my other the sameway that Joe shoots his. I load and maintain the throat the same also. I do not expect this barrel to last forever, just to go 4000 rounds, under 1moa. Then when it opens up to 1 moa I'll screw the new 1 on. Every question that is being asked here is in Joe's older post. I like shooting more then arguing or debating, I'll leave that up to you all. ;D

So, if a similar, slow burning powder is used in the other cartridges listed, similar barrel life will result?

Most likely--the issue would be getting enough of that slow a powder in the smaller (6XC, etc.) cases to get the performance to make it worthwhile.

If 1/2 MOA performance is competitive, that would certainly extend the useful barrel life. In F-Class competition, particularly the Mid Range matches where I shoot 6mm cartridges, 1/2 MOA is not competitive. That is the point at which I usually replace barrels. My requirements are obviously a little more stringent. A shooter competing in 600 yard BR would probably think my criteria are too loose. So, the point is that barrel life is not a hard number but a figure of merit relative to requirements.

under .5 moa. for the longest time it was .25 or less. i have many measured recorded groups in my file. last week at 600 with this barrel, the first 4 measured 1.2 inch then the wind blew when i broke the 5th shot and opened up to just under 2.5 inch. the month before this i shot a 5 shot group at 100 yards just under .25. when this barrel was new, ff at 200 yards i shot a 10 shot group you could cover with a dime. i've shot 2 groups at 100 yards under.1 and a bunch in the .1's all these were 5 shots with 115 dtac. this is my tac rifle. my bench rifle shoots like this one did when it was newer. for fclass or other paper target shooting i require .25 or better. i've won fclass back in the day when i used this barrel, then i moved and picked up tac shooting, but that is all about to change. i have blakely ga 600 & 1000 yard fclass about 190 miles from me. over in swainboro ga 235 miles away 600 & 1000 yards. i'm building a .308 right now. i'm in for a long road of learning, and i welcome it. i shoot port malabar 2-3 times a year the drive is another 235 miles. i love this stuff... p.s. .5 is competitive on steel.

So with a 115 DTAC in the 6cm can you load the bullet to fit magazine length and not have any of the full caliber of the bullet seated in the doughnut .

That is one of the main clambering aspects of the 6xc that I really appreciate. All my rounds can be loaded to have plenty of room in the magazine and still be loaded to touch the lands. And with all that it still keeps the bullet out of the doughnut .

The Winchester brand formed 6CM brass has no doughnut.
I have not ever run the 115s
Went out today and shot @800 yards pushing the 105 Hybrids 3287fps
With a DA of 6300 feet it took 3.8 mils/13.2MOA elevation
Mirage out on the sand was heavy with a air temperature of 103
Five shots five impacts at 800 yards
50g of H-1000
Winchester case
105 Berger Hybrids loaded to 2.810

Lapua Brass , doughnuts = turn necks or inside ream
Winchester Brass , = no doughnuts, just shoot it
I use Alpha 2 mags which will handle 2.9" lenght cartridge. My oal is 2.874"

Dgd6mm,
Is your barrels stock SS or are they Melonited?? Doesn't Joe melonite all of his barrels?? Thanks!!

Raptor,
My 27" Krieger that has 3600 rounds down it is not melonited. My 30" Krieger that has 1009 rounds down it is not melonited. I have a Lawton 28" that was oringinally chamered for a Lawton action by Dave Bruno. Dave has done both of my other barrels and he does excellant Gunsmithing I must add, However the Lawton was taken off the action by the owners brother inlaw and fitted to a Savage action, Rethreaded and chamber recut, it was never shot on the Lawton action. The brother inlaw short chamered it .092. I bought the barrel with under 25 rounds down it, did not check the chamber with my go gauge, sent it off and had it melonited. Found out it was short after the fact. I took 1 of my 6CM dies and the barrel down to my buddy that is a retired G.S. and he figured it all and cut my die down. I can size my brass without fireforming on this one. The brass lenght is 1.970, which is about .070 longer then the 6XC. Haven't screwed it on yet, but will be soon. I'm gonna run this 1 hard.

All this 6mm cm stuff is awsome to read about, so awsome in fact that i just had a gunsmith start building me one in january, I guess its almost done, any help withload data would be great. This i my s ;Decond post, i hope to learn a lot here.

Dgd6mm,
Thanks for the reply!! That is very impressive to get that many accurate rounds out of a 243 based rifle. I just got a reamer for the 6SLR and will be building one of them later on. Thanks again!!

Raptor,
you'll like the 6slr too. It's basically the same round minus a little capacity. But it can really sling a bullet.

Raptor,
No Joe does not melonite his barrels. The 6SLR is a good choice for those that do not like to fireform. This barrel of mine that has all the rounds down it gave me 2 groups at 100 yards last week under .2 inch. Not bad for 3600 rounds.

Who is chambering barrels for the 6CM or 6SLR? I was looking at doing a Savage build and really liked these two rounds.

You can have just about anyone do up a 6mm SLR as reamer prints for the chamberings are shown on the website for the cartridge here:

http://www.6mmar.com/Super_LR.html

There are a lot of smiths out there who have reamers for the 6mm SLR (or you can get your own reamer using one of the prints shown). Fred at Sabreco (610) 584-8228 has reamers for all the prints noted on that web page and can do a chambering in it for you.

Robert

Unfortunately and AFAIK, no barrel manufacturer is chambering for a pre-fit Savage in 6SLR. I wanted a Savage pre-fit in 6SLR, couldn't find a pre-fit, so went with a second 6XC.
