?? 600 YARD DEER KILLER ??

I live in SEMO and killed a 8 point buck at 625 yards off of my deck near my 600 yard target with a 7 wsm. I had been target shooting during deer season and the buck came up to my target. I had a bench and rest, so it was automatic. The Berger 168 or 180 hunting VLD's make it easy. Without the above, I would agree that a 600 yard shot should not be attempted

Your lack of knowledge is showing with your statment about using A-Max bullets for hunting.

Have you shot past 300 yards? Then how do you know?
People is correct and has the knowledge to give GOOD advice. I too have used 162gr Amax bullets on everything from 200lb Mule deer to coyotes to prarriedogs to jackrabbits to whitetails and even a badger. From all distances from 100 yards all the way out past 1000yards.
Its a great hunting bullet. Thin jacket in the front for rapid expansion and enough lead core to hold it all together once it starts to expand. Devastating performance.

Theres some knowledge with experience.

What works for you at 600 yards, apparently works from all I've read to date within the posts here. I will stick with bullets designed for hunting, and not long-range target bullets. V-Max for varmints; A-Max for target shooting; Interbond and SST for Big Game hunting . . . how simple: Hornady's recommendations. OR are you saying Hornady is fudging regarding the A-Max HUNTING prowess? cliffy

I have been shooting for over 65 years, my last mulie was one shot, 280 ack, 700 rem action trued, hart 26 in med heavy bbl, 140 Sierra sbt at 3150fps - , sittin on a hillside in wyoming, using shooting sticks. rifle will shoot .300" i use Luepold 4.5x14x scope. 600 yd is not a problem with equipment, ability, practice, range finder, wind reading experience and a good printout of the load you are shooting giving drift/drop at these ranges - i have a well used crono - if you must have a short action go 7mm short mag

the choice of shots can be very different if you work into a 1/4ing wind position, practice a lot with the rifle you shoot but a lot more with an accurate varmint rifle at 2-400yds in the wind. my longest elk was 485yd, grizzlie 550 (300 wm)

Thanks Ackman. I knew you'd understand and be as compassionate as usual. Only in the military did I shoot 500 yards merely to qualify as Expert for an additional $10 a month combat pay. I cannot promote a 600 yard range for deer hunting. Most shooters cannot hit a deer's vitals at 600 yards, and shouldn't even try so ridiculous a shot. cliffy

Rtheurer, I have a custom 7 Mag that has the Magnum sporter barrel on it, 2 1/2"-3 1/2" groups at 550 yards at the range that I shoot at with 8-32 Burris Black Diamond scope.

Cliffy, people are killing a lot of deer, elk, and Plains game in AFrica with the 7mm 162g A Max bullets.

I did say I'd try an A-Max on a deer, so ease-off please. Still, it'd better work better than a Speer Grand Slam presentation. Or, I'll let you know. cliffy

Cliffy, you don't make any sense.

I've got to agree with Cliffy. While prairie dogs might let you set up a bench rest and lob shells to the horizon hoping to land one on a varmint. Deer will not sit still for such activity. There are lots of rifles and calibers capable of 600 yd kill shots on deer - none of them are light enough to carry and shoot under field conditions.

Robin

I have to disagree. Sendero sized guns are plenty big enough and stable enough for 600 yard 1st shot kills under average field conditions. I have done it and so have my several of my friends. I prefer Sendero sized rifles or slightly larger for most of my hunting. 7mm mags work well and so do and of the 300 magnums. Ballistic tips also do fine at those distances. A 338 edge or lapua improved would be the ultimate

Ackman, you seem to have a problem with my downrange results. Do you truly shoot more accurately than me? Let's find a midway range and face-off accuracywise. I'll drive halfway to your haunts this winter. I'd enjoy meeting-up with you. I think we'd both be enlighted, since I'm always willing to learn. I'll cruise down from MICHIGAN to anywhere halfway USA. Cliffy

.264 Winchesters remain in a tight class of their own regarding extreme accuracy at extended ranges, so long as the shooter practices REGULARILY. Cliffy

Last year I missed antelope 400 yards and elk 625 yards, but killed 3 deer at 400 yards [butt], 500 [lungs] and then 400 yards [spine].

In my whole life here is the big city, all I get is 50 yard and 100 yard paper targets.
I knew I had to take some corrective action for my missing.
I did not know how far I could shoot.
So this year I went hunting early, and set up targets at 100, 400, and 500 yards.
I convinced myself I could hit the vitals at 500 yards, but the rifle must be sighted in just right at 100 yards for the ballistic chart to work.

This year I shot deer at 350 [liver], 400 [heart], 350 [lungs], 350[lungs], 510 [knocked down, got up, and left a blood trail], 350 [head].

Maximum range has lots of variables.
1) conditions: I like shooting when there is no wind and I have time to set up with the bi pod.
2) Skill: My shooting is getting better, and I rate myself out to 500 yards with up to 10mph wind.
3) equipment: Nosler says my 130 gr Ballistic tip need 1600 fps, and I don't get down to that until 650 yards. My Leica 1200 CRF ranges well when I am standing up, but has trouble when I looking through blades of grass while stalking.

Clark, you're the MAN. Getting real and actually practicing is the ONLY key. Yes, 600 yard shots are feasible, but only with A LOT of PRACTICE. I can actually hit a deer-sized target at extreme range, but I'd never recommend trying this to a neophite, who "practices" once with merely twenty rounds just before "hunting season." Luv Ya, cliffy

Cliffy..........................................................your "downrange results" - whatever that is - are way below even the very bottom of my give-a-crap list. My problem is the wrong information you give out and your inane blather about everything.

And drive a day to shoot with you? You're nuts. Even an hour, even 10 minutes, the last thing I care about doing is to waste my time spending any of it with you. You need to get a grip.

SDNeil,

I agree, but I keep coming back to it because its just too funny. Especially when I keep thinking of the tv show "Cheers".

You know the one with Sam, Woody, Diane, Norm & the postman guy, what was his name again?????? He lived with his mom too if I remember.... ;D

But rightfully so, this post should be moved the the "Humor" column..

This post has turned out so absorbing that I find it impossible to let it simply drop. I'm starting to understand Ackman's harsh retorts, more through this post than any others to date. I'm sorry, Ackman, that you find a ten minute drive from home to be severely beaten accuracywise as not-being-worthwhile. You are set in your ways, while I keep learning and improving downrange. Cliffy

You being in Michigan and me in Utah notwithstanding - even if it would be only a 10 minute drive - you still don't get it. I wouldn't drive anywhere to waste time with a fool.

Ackman, when I was stationed at Dugway Proving Grounds, I learned a lot about Utah and the friendly people who live there. You live in some of the most beautiful of God's country, so why are you so cranky at times? You do know to not over-pump your beer keg in the mountains? I can even properly pronounce Tooele, Utah. Johnson Pass is nearly six miles of downhill driving with 400 to 600 Mule Deer standing along side the road on any given night. How am I misleading anyone regarding 600 yard shots, when Point Blank Range is well under 400 yards with any hunting rifle? How much gravity can one viably compensate for in inches (36-76)"? I know, you'll say, I know not of what I speak, so give me the skinny so I can learn. Cliffy
