6.5x47 vs Creedmoor

Judd, I just bought a 6-284 Shilen barrel for a Savage from a guy that lives in Sachse, TX. The 6-284 is about as hot rod in 6mm as you can get. :)

Hey Bill!

I hope things are going well for you. Still have that 22-250, haven't shot it much though. I bought a Rem 220 Swift that has been getting more attention than it has. The Creedmoor and 6BR has been getting the majority of my time though.

I'm hooked :P

Great to hear from you, Judd. And good to see you on this forum.

The Savage 22-250 that I kept now has a 6XC barrel on it - the 22-250 had 1200 rounds down it with a little throat erosion, so I thought it was a good time to re-barrel. And the 6-284 barrel that I just bought will go on that same action. I will be switching back and forth.

Life is good. With space at a premium in my motorhome, I decided I only needed two rifles and extra barrels. Saves buying scopes, too.

Hahaha...if only I was that smart Bill. I am working off the more is better program ;)

I don't know about the 'smart' part, Judd. At the moment, I have two Savage actions and four barrels.
Are you still thinking about a 6-284 for a "hot rod"?

I'm still completely up in the air on which 6mm I am going to go with. Even considering a switch barrel and getting another Creedmoor and a 6mm on the same action. I have a Tikka action that started life as a 338 Fed Mag and got a smoking deal on it. My smith has the barrel off and it just waiting on me. No hurry since I haven't decided on a stock either ;D There are just to dayum many choices...

I had him build the existing Creedmoor on a long action Savage in a Manners tactical thinking that was the game I wanted to play and decided the clay and steel benchrest stuff is a lot more fun (to me) so it is the wrong setup really. So I can either restock and trigger it or sell it. Decisions, decisions...it shoots so good I hate to let it go though.

Since then I bought a 6BR thinking it would be turn key but realized once I got it the HS Precision stock has the rounded fore end so it needs a stock too.

So I have a bunch of stuff to mess with but none of it is 100% what I need but they are all close. I think I am going to get to shoot a Shehane stocked gun this weekend so that should help me decide. I need to pull the 22-250 out and put a different trigger in it and work up a load but again just haven't messed with it and been playing with the others.

That trigger was TERRIBLE when I got the gun. I worked it over and got it decent, but I was never 100% satisfied with it.
You could re-barrel it into a 6mm something. Have you talked or had any dealings with Jim Briggs?

The trigger isn't horrible right now but it definitely could be better. It would be a good hunting trigger but for shooting games it is way to stiff.

I have thought about rebarreling it but right now I have to many potentials projects to think about it. I thought I should sell it since I bought the swift and not shooting it but I haven't had any takers so just put it in the back of the safe. I need to do something with it though. I will eventually hahaha.

No dealing with Mr Biggs to this point. I have a good friend of mine that is a gunsmith and I have used him for everything up to this point.

Not sure if you are at "home" (use that term loosely to a nomad haha) but it takes 4 business days to go from here to Indiana so he might not get it until tomorrow? Not sure if it is our local guys or somewhere in between but they are slow and don't even talk about packages. Took a month one time in December to get a package from my Mom. I'm sure he will get it.

He called me today and I feel much better. The MO hadn't arrived as of today's mail and I'm hoping it arrives tomorrow.
I mailed the money order from a little hick town in Ohio, so it probably took a day and a half just to get out of Ohio.
We're leaving OH heading for AZ on the 27th, so I'm a little antsy to have it in my possession. I also want to have a brake installed by a friend before departure.

I have a 6.5 Creedmoor and I don't see how you can get anymore accurate, lol. I think as long as you have a well built rifle and a capable load any rifle will do well. If you want a short action that is mag fed it hard to beat the 6.5 Creedmoor or 6.5X47L. Single shot the 260 Remington is the way to go.

I've got customs in both. If you want to shoot 140's go Creedmoor. You have to push the Lapua pretty hard to get the 140's up to 2800+ with a stable powder like H4350. I run the 140vlds and I'm running at the the highest node and getting 2800 even. Of course you can use a temp sensitive powder like R17 to get them up over 2800 easily, but with H4350 its a struggle. The Creedmoor will get your velocity up over 2800 and you won't have to push it hard. Both are as accurate as I can be.

I've been shooting LR a very long time; shot NRA HP comp for many years and shot in HM class for many years. I can truthfully say that the 6.5x47Lapua is the most accurate cartridge I have ever fired!

RMulhern, you are the third person that I have heard that exact comment from about the accuracy of the 6x47L. It reinforces my decision for my latest build. I would think it would be the caliber of choice for the OP if accuracy is what he is looking for providing smith, barrel, action, etc.,are all the same. I am looking forward to getting mine. Hopefully it will be in my hands within a week.

Best of luck with whatever you decide on. I don't think you will go wrong with either

About the time the Creedmore came out I was planning a 6.5 build and had narrowed the case choice down to 6.5 x 47 L and the Creedmore. They seemed close enough ballistically so I felt it was a close match. Why did I go with the 6.5L, Lapua makes the brass. Four years later I have never looked back.

I believe this topic is about 6.5 cal cartridges, not 6mm.
