6.5 PRC build?

26" 8t
140s with h1000
It started life as a savage 6.5 Creedmoor
What's the COAL?
Powder load?
A re-chambered factory barrel?
Was the 6.5 CM throat fried, and did you cut it off at the shoulder to rechamber?
Or were you able to rechamber without out cutting off any barrel?

Sorry for all the questions, but I have (2) 6.5 Creedmoors, and I'm thinking about converting one to a 6.5 PRC

Thanks, Josh

Never fired factory chamber indicated and cut. The prc is long enough to obliterate the old chamber. That load was with RL22 and a non magnum primer. Col was within aics mag length.

What are your thoughts on the 6.5PRC? How has it been shooting? Has it been finicky about what it wants to shoot?

Twist? The 147's will fly in a 8 twist. If it was my gun I would go 1-7.5 twist.

Rifling? Style of rifling has for the most part nothing to do with accuracy and barrel life. There are a couple of exceptions to this rule.

Crown? Style of crown has nothing to do with accuracy. I've shot them all. Flat, 11 degree, stepped recess, sporter etc...what I do feel is important is a clean edge at the bore with no burr and perpendicular to the bore etc...also I cut a chamfer on the edge of the bore. I do believe it helps with the gas cutting effect and will help the crown last longer. A sharp flat edge doesn't hold up well and also will show cleaning damage much sooner from improper cleaning techniques in my opinion.

Treatment? In regards to what?

Profile? If a PRS style gun I would run a heavy palma or a med. palma as the lightest contour. It will help keep the weight down vs. a str. taper barrel.

Frank, on the 6.5 PRC would you recommend the short action or something like the XM that Defiance makes that handles COAL to 3.2”? If you wanted to go with a gain twist what would it be targeting performance from 140 grain Berger’s? At what length barrel do you reach diminishing returns with the 6.5 PRC; 26, 27, 28?
Thanks!

140s without trying, it'll work just fine in a SA

It's been great, pretty much the SAUM , but less powder. I would rate it solidly as a great cartridge.

I've been running the 6.5PRC with Berger 140VLDs over Re-25, MRP2 and IMR-7828 all with excellent results. I use the AICS DBM for nearly everything so the OAL limit is usually 2.925" +/- a touch. I have no reason to even give credence to using a long action since this set up works extremely well for me.

My current project is a 20" Proof CF barrel chambered for the 6.5PRC on a titanium action in one of my lightweight chassis.

Using water in a primed new case NOT fireformed = 67.9 grains of H2O.
Very close to the 68.6gr I measured. Mine was an average of 10 cases. One of my loads uses 59gr H1000 and I have gone up to 60 without undue compression using Sierra 150s. Have not tried RL26 because I got such good results with the H 1000.

It will run thru a SA. If you want the slightly longer length like the XM it wouldn't hurt. I would say it more depends on the chamber reamer your using and the loads you will run thru it.

Todd here in the shop built one on a SA Remmy 700. The reamer we used in it had like a .020" shorter throat. His is a hunting rifle and the barrel finish length is 24". Box Hornady ammo/147gr. bullets are coming out at 2970-3000fps.

Barrel length? I'm going to throw a 32" barrel on my F open gun. With out running abnormally high pressure rounds thru it (they'll be good everyday working loads) I want to see what I can get out of it. My barrel is a 1-7.25 twist. I'll have it put on after SWN. Dave is taking my gun down as a back up gun. The barrel on it right now is in .300PRC.

I get 3120 out of the Sierra 150 using 59gr H1000 in my 30" 5r 7.5t Bartlein. You will probably get more, especially if you use R26 and much more with140 gr bullets.
Keep us informed of your results.

Bill, Will do. Should get the barrel on the gun late Feb. I’ve got everything else here. So should be able to sling some lead thru it by early March.

Thanks Frank. Sounds like I will be fine on the SA. I believe the reamer that will be used has .142 freebore. Everything will be handload. I’ve ordered a selection of Jlk, Berger, & elds. My concern was being to test from touching the lands if wanted and never have to seat a bullet bearing surface below shoulder to eliminate feed issues. I think it’s been addressed. It does seem like the XM or equivalent would be perfect for this cartridge. Thanks for feedback!

When the time come i’ll Have to ask questions about the 300 PRC. I have a 300 WM i’m Not happy with. I’ve been shooting 300 WM a long time. Started as a kid in the USMC.
