6.5 Grendel in a Remington 700 repeater?

Any update on this build Erik? I recently started thinking about doing the same thing but with a 6mmAR (necked down grendel) and using the PTG bottom metal for AR mags. Please keep us up to date on how this is going, you results may very well make my decision.

Eric, I'm putting together an XP in 6.5 Gren. for my daughter for deer. I was thinking of using the Nosler 100-120 NBTs in it (2650-2750 fps range)with 748 (we'll see ;D).

Looks like he built his with an AICS mag system, I wonder how the 6.5 Grendel would feed from a 223 AICS mag. Might have to mess with the feed lips a bit to get it to run right, but might work too. Or, that could be why he is selling it.

The grendel has been one of my most fav rounds to have... they work on deer VERY well! 123amax is the ticket 8.75 twist 24 inch barrel. Shoots bugholes!! Ive gotten sub 3 inch groups out to 750 yards so far with it.

reloader15 has been amazing with it.. but theres no published data that ive seen...

Let us know how it works out! It seems like it should work because the AR's are easy to convert from 223/5.56 to 6.5grendel...
Thanks,
Ken

A 6.5 Grendel on a CZ 527 would be a very neat lightweight gun.

For those that are interested like me, you can buy the actions only now.

I am really liking the Grendel CZ527 Scott built for me. Rebarreled a 7.62X39 carbine with an Obermeyer 1:8.4 fluted barrel finished at 22 inches turned down to fit the factory stock fluted that was opened up to get rid of the cutout for the sights. Glass and pillar bedded. He also did a little work on the factory mag so it feeds very smooth. Just started working with reloads for it and the Berger Hybrid 130gr bullets are shooting fantastic IMO. The pic below is with those bullets using Hodgdon CFE 223. Loads are for boltaction only. At 100 yards with Hornady A-Max loads this gun is shooting less than 3/4 inch, with the Bergers it is getting half inch or less if I do my part and I haven't shot but twice really since November so not bad I think. Not bad for a 6lb rifle.

BOLT ACTION LOADS ONLY

BOLT ACTION LOADS ONLY. all groups are 3 shots except bottom right which was 7 with one being to the left called that way when shot. The 3 at the center of the target were with a new shooter and 30 grains of powder.

Looks great. What's the max overall length that you can fit in those CZ mags? Any feeding issues at all? And how many can you fit in the mag?

The mags are 2.31 max room and feed very well with COAL of 2.285, 2.29 feeds well with the Bergers but not as good with SSTs. Mag was designed for 5 7.62X39s and works well with the Grendel loaded with 4 rounds. The grendel is not as tapered of a case so that must be taken into account.

The Gunsmith that built this gun uses CNC mills and has the programs saved to he can repeat the same build easily and is talking about one for his daughter and wife.

At about 6lbs it is very handy and well balanced. The trigger that comes on the CZ is really nice being a single set trigger this one when set breaks consistantly at 10 ounces when set. Measured those groups today and not counting the 2 fliers that were called by me the smallest 3 shot group is .28 inches and the largest is .48 the 6 shot group is .6 inches. Those loads are all with CFE 223 COAL 2.285 and the powder charges were dropped with a RCBS powder drop.

Very cool little rifle Kmon. ;D

I always wanted a SAKO in 6PPC but have never ran across one that I could afford at the time. One day I got to looking at the little 527 like yours and figured a simple barrel swap would be a nice alternative to that SAKO. Hear say is that the 7.62X39 Version actually shoots pretty darn good too.
Now I own two AR uppers chambered up in 6mm FAT RAT which is a version of the 6.5Grendel necked down to 6mm. Owning dies and brass would be a cool little set up for which I am already kinda ready for.

Thanks for sharing. Very neat.

You mean like a 6mm PPC? ;D

6ppc with the shoulder blown forward 0.010 and blown out to 40 degrees. But, yeah, other than that its a PPC ;)

I built a 6 RAT on a 527 carbine in 7.62x39 a couple of years ago. Used a Krieger #4 sporter and turned the shank down to 1.070" for a better match with the 527's receiver. Finished the 1-8tw bbl at 24", replaced the OEM set trigger with a JARD, mounted a Sightron Big Sky 4.5-14x44 in the factory rings, and the finished rifle weighs in at just over 8lbs. I could've saved myself some inlet work by also shortening the Krieger's shank an inch or so - that's what I did while building the 2nd one for a customer a year later. That Turkish walnut CZ uses is HARD; wish I'd have done the same when I built mine.

Downside to using the CZ is that you've gotta seat 105-107gr bullets pretty deep to get them to fit the CZ magazine; single-feeding with the heavier bullets seated out where you'd normally put them doesn't work because of the CZ's Mauser-style extractor. I replaced the factory set trigger because I wasn't happy with it - the JARD was easy to install, reasonably priced, and has an excellent light & crisp break. I've dinked around with the factory mag's feed lips, but it's still not 100% reliable - it feeds FF loads in 6.5 Grendel better than fully-formed brass.

Like Russ, I'd thought about using a SAKO PPC action, but every one I've seen on GunBroker wound up selling for $1400+. And besides - who wants to tear apart a collectable SAKO just for the action? I've still got a NIB, unfired SAKO single shot 6PPC, and don't have any intention of using it as a donor. If only we could buy bare Sako PPC actions for a reasonable price...

Eric,
Our new 6.5 130 grain AR/OTM/HUNTING HYBRID bullet would be just the ticket for that build. Part number 26195. We recommend a 1-8.5 twist barrel and this bullet is designed to be used at magazine length for the GRENDLE , 260 Remington, 6.5 Creedmore etc.

I've experimented with S95MKs at mag length in my 24" 6 RAT AR15 with excellent results - need to load some for the CZ to see how they shoot in it. To date, the heaviest bullet I've loaded for the CZ has been Berger's 90BTHP, which has a BC considerably lower than Sierra's 95MK. My guess is that Berger's 87gr VLD would be a good one to try - they're often hard to find (as were the S95MKs), but it'd be an interesting bullet to work with.

Those 130 Hybrid bullets are very nice. The target I posted earlier in this thread were shot with them. Might try to find a hog in the next few weeks to try them on.
