6.5 creedmoor bullet for hunting....

I have finally just said to heck with it and bought a Tikka in 6.5 CM to hunt whitetail here in S. Texas... I was looking for a light recoil , light weight rifle and this one appears to be it... I tried to go sight it in and get some data to day and after a 40 mile drive I didn't have my tripod for the lab radar.... Figures....

This thing will be used on S. Texas whitetail as stated , they are small animals maybe 100 lbs... Then maybe for some small hogs also... Any good bullet out there that you're using and know it will get the job done in this caliber..???? Once I get some factory data I will be reloading for it..

I have seen videos where deer get hit and run away but I have seen some large animals killed with it... I have 6mm Remington , 30.06 which is useless for these deer unless you only want half a deer and a long distance setup heavy rifle in .308... So I have rifles that will get the job done for sure but I would like to use this light Tikka in this light recoiling 6.5CM round... I understand about shot placement being key but anybody else using this on whitetail with good luck and what ammo or bullet do you really like...

Thanks in advance...
Shawn

I happen to have also purchased a Tikka T3X 6.5 Creedmoor for exactly the same purpose though I’m hunting south west Mississippi where I reside. I have had excellent success on our deer with the 120 gr. Nosler Ballistic Tip. A friend has also loaded those in a 6.5 Creedmoor for his daughter who has killed a number of deer with that bullet as well. I have not taken any hogs with it as that opportunity hasn’t presented itself but am confident that the bullet would do the job though if hogs were my primary target I might pick a different bullet.

I have personally seen the performance of the Hornady 129 gn spire point Interlocks and HIGHLY recommend these for medium (deer) sized game animals. Very good hunting bullet. Super accurate in my testing but i've only shot these out to 400 yards. If I needed shots longer than that I would go with an ELD-X. Those are designed to work in a wider velocity range than the standard Interlock.

My 20" lightweight Savage 6.5CM shoots 85gr Hammer Hunters to 3431 fps. I use StaBall MATCH for the temp stability. I shot a buck in Oklahoma with it. He ran about 30 yards in a circle and piled up. Insides were turned to jelly. I think that combo would work just fine on 100 lb TX deer....

but anybody else using this on whitetail with good luck and what ammo or bullet do you really like...
I pretty much use the Berger VLD-H 130 gr bullets in my 6.5 and 105 gr bullets in my 6 CM's. Until last year nothing but outstanding results. The deer I shot last year was walking toward me. Enough of an angle, that the center of the chest meant I had to shoot to the deer between the center of the breast plate and the front of the shoulder. Bang, flop. But when I skinned the deer, the majority of the bullet had stayed on the outside of the rib cage and passed under the shoulder of the front leg. I tried other bullets in case I have a quartering frontal shot again in the future. My backup bullet uses a Nosler 120 gr BT bullet.

I had two reasons for picking the VLD-H Bergers. Accuracy, and bullet expansion at long range.

Ok thank you that's a large selection of ideas.... I was thinking Hornady SST 129 or 140 but I will look into some of these....

we have taken a LOT of whitetails with berger 140vldH bullets. super accurate and super deadly. most drop right where they stand. only a few have gone up to 50 yards.

I loaded these for my buddy to hunt deer and hogs with in Texas, Michigan, Ohio and Illinois. He swears by them and says they are the most accurate ammo he’s ever fed through his Christensen Arms rifle.
Hornady 129gr SST
44.6gr of Hornady Superformance
Federal 210M primers
2767fps using a .265 bushing (.004” neck “tension”)
COAL - 2.7880”
CBTO - 2.1920”

They have been making jacketed deer hunting bullets for longer than a lot on here have been alive. The 6.5CR replicates the ballistics of the existing 6.5x55 Swede which was accepted for military use for killing humans in 1894. It worked. Pick a bullet. It. Wont. Matter. It's a 100-lb deer. All, every one of them, every manufacturer makes a .264 hunting bullet weighing between 120g and 140g that will work for your 6.5 CR. And the best part is that the 6.5 is magic, it cant miss. Way way way way more important is that you get your weapon down tight, take some practice to sight it in, and more important yet scout out your hunting area. Report back here in the Hunting and Varmitter forum. Good luck.
