6.5 creedmoor bullet for hunting....

I loaded these for my buddy to hunt deer and hogs with in Texas, Michigan, Ohio and Illinois. He swears by them and says they are the most accurate ammo he’s ever fed through his Christensen Arms rifle.
Hornady 129gr SST
44.6gr of Hornady Superformance
Federal 210M primers
2767fps using a .265 bushing (.004” neck “tension”)
COAL - 2.7880”
CBTO - 2.1920”

That bullet and powder loaded as factory ammo is what I have been buying and storing for future , they say it's a real killer in the hunting world , I always like to have a few boxes of factory stored away... I have some 140gr SST to load up and try out then maybe a few bergers etc... if nothing else I will have data on some bullets for that rifle and caliber...

They have been making jacketed deer hunting bullets for longer than a lot on here have been alive. The 6.5CR replicates the ballistics of the existing 6.5x55 Swede which was accepted for military use for killing humans in 1894. It worked. Pick a bullet. It. Wont. Matter. It's a 100-lb deer. All, every one of them, every manufacturer makes a .264 hunting bullet weighing between 120g and 140g that will work for your 6.5 CR. And the best part is that the 6.5 is magic, it cant miss. Way way way way more important is that you get your weapon down tight, take some practice to sight it in, and more important yet scout out your hunting area. Report back here in the Hunting and Varmitter forum. Good luck.
Yup , I am late to the 6.5 game... Been shooting 6mm Remington since I was a kid.... Now that's the magic bullet in my opinion.... I have many other hunting rifles but wanted something new and the 6.5 CM round seems like it's going to be around for awhile... I did sight in the rifle and my last three shot group was 6/10s and the gun wants to shoot tighter but after the last three years on a skeet field and zero rifle shooting it's showing up a little.... No problem , I went today with my little trainer .22 and got some trigger time... It will take a little bit but I'll get it back since I have basically stopped with the shotgun sports it's gotten too expensive...

I’ve killed multiple deer with both 6mm Rem and 6.5 CM. A reloaded 85 gr soft point in the 6mm is deadly with little damage. I’ve only used factory Hornady 127 gr (I believe) in the CM. Furthest a deer has gone is 30 yds. But it does some damage too.

The 129gr bullet has crazy low recoil even shot out of a super light mountain rifle. Let me know if you need any more info. Glad to help.

I’ve used the 120 gr Nosler BTs for years, on deer and hogs of all sizes. Great bullet. And I also used the Nosler 100 gr BTs on deer and hogs, and they worked great too. The hard part is finding those bullets these days, though I have plenty. If I didn’t, I’d use the bullet that I load for the Grendel, the 123 gr SST.

I think the SST may win out simply because they can be found local at a semi decent price.... We will see after loading some... Even bullets are sooo expensive and hard to find....

I would have to think the SST would work great in 6.5CM too.

This year I shot my buck with the 135gr Berger CH, my first deer with a 6.5CM. I hit just above the heart and got both lungs.. deer did not react like it was hit and ran, on somewhat of a mellow pace, 100ish yards before he dropped. My only complaint was zero blood trail. Part of the bullet passed through and some of the jacket was stuck under the hide. Virtually no meat loss. This bullet groups very well for me and I have great confidence with it's accuracy.

By comparison I have seen a similar result with my 308 shooting the 165gr SST when the shot placement was about the same. 4-5 years back I had a doe take a double lung, grazed the heart shot run like a raped ape for 75 yards before piling up. The only real difference was the 308 left a bit of a blood trail. Again virtually no meat loss.

The other bullet I would use in 6.5CM for hunting is the 120gr NBT, but I have not put them to the test yet. They shoot really well for me, but I don't have many on hand and I like to practice leading into deer season. They'll probably stay in reserve until I can find more.

I have finally just said to heck with it and bought a Tikka in 6.5 CM to hunt whitetail here in S. Texas... I was looking for a light recoil , light weight rifle and this one appears to be it... I tried to go sight it in and get some data to day and after a 40 mile drive I didn't have my tripod for the lab radar.... Figures....

This thing will be used on S. Texas whitetail as stated , they are small animals maybe 100 lbs... Then maybe for some small hogs also... Any good bullet out there that you're using and know it will get the job done in this caliber..???? Once I get some factory data I will be reloading for it..

I have seen videos where deer get hit and run away but I have seen some large animals killed with it... I have 6mm Remington , 30.06 which is useless for these deer unless you only want half a deer and a long distance setup heavy rifle in .308... So I have rifles that will get the job done for sure but I would like to use this light Tikka in this light recoiling 6.5CM round... I understand about shot placement being key but anybody else using this on whitetail with good luck and what ammo or bullet do you really like...

Thanks in advance...
Shawn
I am old, old fashioned, and stubborn. I would use a 125 gr Nosler Partition.

This is the only thing that makes me a little nervous about the 6.5 CM as a deer rifle... I have seen a few videos of bullets blowing threw the deer and it running with hardly no blood trail.... Then I have seen videos of deer crumpling and DRT , not running one foot.... My friend has shot some bigger animals in Africa with the 6.5 CM and he said they all dropped right where they were shot including a deer of some kind at over 400 yards , he had some pictures and both where way bigger than a S. Texas deer... Some super expensive hunt his job paid for... He told me he has zero fear of the caliber being under powered... This is why I was trying to get some real world experience from some of you guys who hunt with it... No doubt it's become a very popular round...

Berger 130 OTM has a great reputation for accuracy and effect. It is very similar to a favorite .270 Win load. Other good options would be Nosler partition 125 gr or any bonded 130 that is accurate. The target is light and probably fairly close, so 140 gr and heavier are not needed.

I've used the 130 gr. Sierra Tipped GameKing some. I often don't get an exit, which is of concern if hunting near brush thickets. I also used the ELD-X and found the same thing. I prefer the 130 gr Accubond for the 6.5 Creedmoor or a Barnes Tipped TSX. Either will give me a good exit at just about any angle which means big blood train should I need it.

Having shot a bunch of deer and hogs over the years with the 120 gr Nosler BT (and the 100 gr, as I mentioned earlier), they are very effective, and I have to say that the 100 gr seems to do as well on the critters as the 120’s, which was a surprise. I had been coyote hunting with the 100’s when deer season came along one year, so I didn’t change to the 120’s. Too lazy. The deer and hogs didn’t go any further than they had with the heavier bullet hitting them. One thing of note is that both bullets mostly exited deer but rarely exited hogs. I’m aiming for the lungs most times.

Lately I’ve been using the 6.5 Grendel for hogs, now that my deer season is over, and the 123 gr SSTs have terminated every hog I’ve shot. That’s why I said I’d have no problem using the 123 SSTs if I ever ran out of the Nosler bullets.
