.300 WSM WOW!

Any different bullet types used...
Any different powders used...?
Any different freebore's or seating depths...?
Any more "tricks of the trade", so to speak with the 300 WSM?

I've followed the masses and shoot the Berger 215gr hybrid - S&B primers though with RL23 powder. Bullet seating depth testing show 20-30 thou jump to be the sweet spot with velocity around 2920fps. I doubt I'll need to rechamber until next year where the recipe will change.

Hi Willow,
Im building a WSM here in OZ.
Did you have no luck with any of the ADI powders here.
2209,2213,2217 ?
I only have Fed210s, 208 ELDMs, 215 Hyb and 210VLDs to ise at the moment.
Was hoping to get something going with what I have as no reloder powders available here in South OZ.
Any help appreciated.

Hi Dicko,

I was one of the earliest proponents of stocking up on RL23 in Australia before NIOA ran out, so I've got enough of that to get me through the next 3 years or so. If I didn't have RL23 I'd be using 2213SC, I know a couple of guys using that and they all find success around 66gr with 215gr hybrids, or similar. Can't comment on the Fed 210s, but other shooters I know here run CCI BR2's, but good luck finding those now too. Hopefully the Federal primers work, but I'd go straight to 2213SC and try the 215s, followed by the 210s, but I can't see the 215s letting you down.

Thanks mate,
I will give it a crack and see how it goes!

I dont compete but rl23 has been fantastic in anything i tried it in. 300 wsm with vld 210, elite 180, and now 208 long range hybrids. Very consistent ragged one hole 3 shot groups at 100 and holds under moa to 1400. Works great in my 257 bob too lol

Would you mind sharing your load and OAL with RL23 and the 208 LRHT's?

What is your free bore?
Honestly not sure. I had Jim at northland shooter supply order me a brux barrel years ago for this savage action and told him I was going to be most likely shooting 210 vld’s i believe. But i dont see any designation on the barrel so it may be saami spec. These 208’s are very long, 1.58”. Lands is at 2.450” on the comparator, which is 3.234” overall length.
the 210 hunter vld i use for deer are on lands at 2.410”, closer to 3.095” oal they shoot good 30 off with 65.3 gr re23

Anyway to measure and find out? Whats a saami chamber with a 210 work out to be to the lands i guess would be a possible way to know. Either way im happy with it.
I got magazine loads at 2.97” oal with 180 and 210’s that jump a mile and shoot great. That 210 i load down to the slower node at 2750 fps and 64 grain. The 180 zips at 3068 fps and is a lazer at 68.5 grains. Shocked at how well it does given the huge leap to the lands

View attachment 1183417 I have committed further to the 300WSM

My previous stock handled the WSM pretty well, but torque was definitely an issue, as was the potential for recoil fatigue over multi day shoots.

So I have acquired a Dima RS F-open stock and had my Barnard bedded into it with a new Krieger 10twist barrel.
In the back end of the stock I have had a Rucker’s Bump Buster installed with a kickeez dual density recoil pad.

Last weekend I put a few rounds through it to run in, but this weekend was my first hit out with the new stock.

I can say having a low profile stock with a good recoil system has made a huge difference in how I can shoot this calibre.

I haven’t shot much at all this year thanks to Covid and am a little rusty, but I though I would film my first detail with the new combo, I am shooting this near free recoil and it tracks so bloody well!!

A have fitted a new much crisper/lighter trigger to the Barnard which caught me out a few times and need to bring the scope back about 1/2” as I am trying to climb up the stock to get a clear sight picture.

But this next barrel looks like it’s going to be much like the first as far as tuning, forgiving!!

Nice build. I would like to know if it is reasonably convenient to shoot 300wsm free recoil? Or does one actually need to apply some shoulder?

I shoot 308win FTR (200.20x @ 2680 fps), and shoot pure free recoil. I now have an F open rifle, 300wsm, Nesika action, Bartlein 30" barrel (1.25" dia for 5", straight taper to 1" dia at the muzzle). Its with an AIAX chassis l, which might not be ideal, but this is what I got (used to be a 300wm). It weighs close to 21 lbs with scope and all.

I plan to shoot the 215 hybrids that I have, N165, Murom primes, Norma brass.
