.243FC vs. 6mm XC vs. 6mm CM, etc.

So... what's the story on this new .243FC I see mentioned in Jeff Cochran's F-class article? How's it stack up w/ the 6mm XC and 6mm CM, or others? Case capacity, velocity, etc. etc. etc. We want details! :D

Thanks,

Monte

You want the short version or the long version ?

In short, its a .243 Lapua case pushed back to a 30 degree shoulder with a .346" neck lenght. After seeing your post I checked the water capacity to the top of the neck. It is 52.0 grains. Sounds a little high to me but thats what it weighed.
I've ran 107's to 3200 fps and shot a couple of club matches at 3100 fps. I cant tell you what 115's will run because I dont have any. Traylors' in charge of the 115 testing and he keeps complaining that its to cold to shoot.

Jeff

Well heck, if you have the time, how about the long version :D

Specifically, what about the .243 are you trying to 'fix'?

Why not the 6mmXC?

Merits of this case vs. others,6mm CM, some of the 'stretched' 6mm BR derivatives, etc.)

The case capacity does seem a bit high, but if thats what your scales show, then I guess thats what it is.

What do you foresee barrel life to be, used in,relatively) slow fire prone competition such as HighPower & F-Class?

Thanks,

Monte

Monte,
we were trying to get away from the 6XC for brass reasons, I bought 700 pieces of Tubbs 3rd generation brass and was less than happy with the quality. Norma 22-250 is good but expensive, this way we can use Lapua cases. We both liked the idea of the long neck and 30 degree shoulder, I don't know what Jeff is thinking for expected barrel life, but I am going guess around 2000 rounds + or - 500 depending on powder used and how much is used.

I hope to do some load testing with the 115's next week, I have a Broughton 1-8" and a Krieger 1-7.5" to try.

Jeff, I like your thinking. This is the same reasoning I used when coming up with the 6TBR. I had two Pandas I used for live varmints in 6BR and .243 Win and wanted a combination of the two all in one cartridge. I wanted something larger than the 6BR, but with a case design similar to the 6BR,30 degree shoulder, longer neck). I looked at the Dasher but it wasn't big enough for my purposes. I looked at the 6-250 based cases but wanted to use a Lapua made case. The Lapua .243 cases are so well made and are still somewhat reasonably priced as compared to Norma .22-250 cases, so I knew that would be the best case to use. Since I already had Redding Comp die sets for both the 6mmBR and .243 cartridges I came up with the idea of using these dies to form the 6TBR.

From your article I was curious as to your case forming steps/procedure?

Good job on the article and on the new case!

Thanks Fireball

I'm not ignoring you or Monte, just trying to decide if the idea is worth another article before I give up to much. I had alot of fun writing the last one. Besides its still a work in progress.
Traylor hit on the 6XC. As far as the 6CM, It looks to be a guarded secret, I dont know anything about it.

Jeff

Jeff,

That's fine. I imagine we'll read about it one way or another... either in the forums here or on the main page ;)

I went w/ a plain .243 for my next barrel; should prove interesting. My only issue w/ the 6mm CM,and I've had this discussion w/ joesr about it) is that I'm enjoying a) the ease/joy of rebarreling my own guns by using Savage actions, and b) the lack of a 10-12wk lead time to get a Krieger by using a readily available pre-threaded-n-chambered barrel from Pac-Nor or others. Right now the 6mm CM,and many other 6mm wildcats, not just this one) isn't available that way, so no go for me. Such is life.

Thanks,

Monte

Yeah - Monte - you keep selling me your old beat-up .308 barrels so you can keep adding various new 6mm barrels to your closely guarded inventory... ;)

Heck, if you had a Savage I'd sell ya that tomato stake that I used in the Findlay Cup and ISSC last year... then again, maybe not :D

Where is the article written by Jeff. I can't find it.

I think the water weight, given the neck length sounds correct. The 6CM has a water weight of 55.0 grains and it has a neck length of .264".

I'd like to see some more information on this 243FC. It sounds like it is simular to the 6CM, possibly with different goals and that would explain the difference in design.

As far at the 6CM being a "guarded secrete" it is not. I simply have asked that people contact me directly. I sent Jeff an email and received no reply. Possibly it didn't go through.

If you want more information on the 6CM just ask.

I found your message. It was sent through the forum and my pop up blocker stopped it.
We are going to redesign the reamer so I'm not sure what the finished spec will be but we'll keep the neck lenght over .300" and straighten up the body a bit more. Capacity wont change much.
I've run 107's at 3200 fps and shot a couple of club matches with it, but turned my attention to getting my 6.5 ready for the season. We'll get back to it soon.

hello guys mind if i ask a question, would a straight 243 with a 24inch tube 1in8 twist or maybe 1in7 shooting 115 dtac & lapua brass be a good contender for long range say 600 to 1000y comps? im trying to sorce such a barrel from Blaser in germany & run it on my Lrs2, the barrel im shooting at moment is a blaser in 243 but only has a 1 in 10 twist which is great using the 90 scenars but no go with the 105 scenars, how do you guys find the lapuas to the 115 dtac, paul T Ireland.

Paul,

The 1 in 7 would be the choice for the 115's and the 1 in 8 should work fine for the 105 and may work for the 115's.

I question the 24" length. Depending on the powder used you may not get enough velocity. You should probably shoot a 28" barrel if possible.

Joe H

joe H, what velocity range useing 105 lapua scenars in 243 would i need to achieve to be competitve for 600 to 1000y, paul T.
